I like how you described it because saying repetitions definitely describes it better. I wonder if he says 10, 000 how because it catches in the brain better. If you're doing something for 10, 000 hours, you're definitely putting hours in.

Andrew, you may be interested in Miyamoto Musashi, "The Book of Five Rings." Musashi spoke of zazen, as the attention to the ten thousand things. You learn to pay attention to the ten thousand things, (and the number ten thousand stands for more things than you can count superficially), and then you forget them. You ingrained it in your subconscious, and don't deal with it consciously anymore.
He said once you gained zazen, you could carry it to another discipline.
There was a diminutive master of the tea ceremony. He came to Musashi, "Please teach me to die with honor." He told the story of a Ronin who slammed into him, and declared the tea master had hit him, and challenged him to a duel at dawn.
Musashi said, "You are a master of the tea ceremony, serve me tea." After tea, Musashi said, "You performed the ceremony perfectly. You have all it takes to succeed in the duel." He showed the tea master how to hold the sword, how to swing, and told him, "Focus all your energy on striking at his core."
The tea master showed up. The ronin was there. They began, the tea master took up the sword properly, completely focused on the ronin, and the ronin made excuses, and ran away.
Having gained the broad focus on a discipline, and integrated it into his subconscious, he could easily apply his zazen to another discipline.
I think Japanese learn to golf for this reason, the potential of gaining zazen through a golf swing. .
I should say, Buddhists see zazen as seated meditation.

i also like “practice doesn’t make perfect. perfect practice does.” just a way of saying that you can put in 10k hours or as many repetitions as you want, but time spent on a practice could be more valuable if you put intent into it rather than just repping it out

10000 hour rule should be enforced with the old martial art saying, " Nobody will be afraid of your 1000 moves that you have practiced one time but they will be afraid of your one move which you have practiced 1000 times"

High or low level skill learning must have a component of the quality of the learning.

When I was 16 I learned programming in C++ in 21 days which could have otherwise taken months. I learnt PHP script in almost an hour which could also have taken months. I learnt most of the Professional Graphic design software in minutes to be honest. But sometimes months won’t even be enough to learn a simple software or programming language…so I know rapid learning can happen because it has happened to me. I’ve always said eagerness, yearning and a hint of naivety can help you exert oneself into an elevated operational capacity.

I totally agree 👍 is 1 repetition enough 😬

Never heard of the 10k hours but I did hear of the 1000 reps to lean a martial art technique.

90% there. It's about perfect or nearly perfect repetitions.

So when companies look for “quick learner” they literally just mean someone with experience with that job 😂

What makes grown men think like that?
Certainly he meant to say, it has never existed yet.

But if You do the repetitions wrong you learn it wrong. Almost impossible . to unlearn the skill that is wrong

It does for me. I wanted a rifle age 18 months. I played squash at a below average level, I played table tennis at a very low level, I went to an archery club. At 13, I was a poor athlete, at nineteen I was a poor basketball player. These, and a dozen other skills I became competent to world, and champion Olympic level. Most amazing, I suddenly played table tennis ambidextrous? These are only a few where I excelled in seconds. A range master was shocked onto silence on seeing my targets. My IQ then was 178.

what a strange answer. so as one person commented that the "10, 000 hours of repetition gets you that skill" Yes he forget the saying use it or lose it since so many forget math problems when they dont do it. just like muscles when you do not maintain it leaves so you want that skill then you do a lot at a short time and you have to keep maintaining to practice every so often to keep it.
Do I need to explain more? Somethings his lessons are 1/2 explanations which can be an issues and maybe he does not know the full truth and says somethings things that are obvious and misses many points.

It's not even about repetitions either. A lot of the skill acquisition happens in the subconscious when you're not even practicing it.
