When I was a kid I forgot my lunch so my school gave me a PBJ. When I told them I was allergic they told me to not be so difficult and just “scrape it off.” They wouldn’t let me call my mom for her advice/to bring a safe lunch either. People are pretty uninformed about food allergies, so I’m really glad this video exists.

I was in a Stanford Pediatric study sponsored by a company trying to prove that their subcutaneous-injected drug lessened allergic reactions. As part of the study, I received free allergy therapy(went from reacting to 144mg to tolerating over 2000mg!), took multiple breathing tests(having an allergy makes you more likely to have asthma, which makes allergic reactions more dangerous), and got an innumerable amount of injections and blood draws. As a person who cringes at anything injury, blood, or horror related, it brought me a lot of confidence to know that I overcame my fear of needles(as long as I don’t look while its inserted), and I know that blood draws don’t actually hurt that bad lol. I now eat 3 Reese’s pieces a day as a way to keep my tolerance up, so if I eat something with peanuts or traces of peanuts, I won’t react. However, many people aren’t as lucky to be as healthy and tolerant as I am, and so I make it my business to be an advocate for allergies as much as I can. Please always inform others of allergens in baked goods you make, and never share food with others, especially little oblivious children, without asking their parents. <3

My cousin actually outgrew his peanut allergy, almost died as a kid eating a pack of peanuts at day care. He got tested at 18 and was told he wasn't anymore and immediately ran and got a Reese's PB cup and had his EpiPen at the ready just in case but nope, he's good to go now

I wouldn't rely on Benedryl for mild anaphylactic reactions if epi-pens didn't cost a months rent.

Thank you for these explanations my mother and my doctor disagree over whether I'm allergic to fish and shellfish. He says I am and my mother says I'm not because I just throw up and sometimes get hives that's not a real allergy that's insensitivity according to her. Luckily my doctor has made sure that I am carrying an EpiPen even though I've never had anaphylactic shock, just in case. The fact that he prescribed the EpiPen made her think that maybe there's a slight chance he might have been right. It's nice to know my doctor is taking good care of me I've seen several doctors on here who are not allergy specialist saying that vomiting is not an allergy reaction.

Glad to hear the point around exposure to allergens. I had a coworker once who went to visit a friend and, being extremely allergic to nuts, the friend made sure the cake they baked was absolutely nut-free. Afterward, my coworker collapsed on the street, lost strength in the legs and had to use her Epi-pen. Turns out that prior to baking the nut-free cake, her friend may have baked a cake including nuts using the same pan. The doctor warned them that even after washing, allergens can linger in cookware. Please be extra careful when cooking/baking for people with allergies.

Allergies are no joke and more people need to watch this video because man, some people think I can just remove the carrots from a dish and still eat it because "you're not eating it directly" :I

Also if my boyfriend has eaten almonds or hazelnuts he can't breathe on me because that makes my throat start itching and I start coughing because it swells a little, it's very scary..He's the only one who doesn't question me when I say I can't be standing close to someone who had eaten either of those things.

More people should watch this video for sure.

Thank you for this. I've had people tell me they've never heard of someone having a reaction to the smell of shellfish even when I'm gasping for air in front of them. I've had doctors say my blood test say I'm not allergic even when they've seen me go into anaphylaxis. I've even heard the very disdainful "it's just your upper airway swelling" by ER nurses and doctors.

I have a shellfish allergy and I desperately can’t wait until a treatment is available to cure this allergy… I am always worried about cross-contamination when I go out to eat and it’s a pain to always remember to carry my epi-pen (although grateful to have one since I know so many can’t!)

I wish I could consult one of these two knowledgeable specialists. I developed food allergies as an adult.
Can we also bring up the fact that you can have a severe anaphylactic reaction without any hives? Apparently this is something even some medical professionals don't understand and consequently they won't take you seriously because you don't have hives.

I had a blood test when I was little to check to see if I was still allergic to peanuts. They said no. Turns out they were very very wrong 😬😬😬😂

I found out I’m allergic to my dog after feeling super itchy and then getting that graffiti style reaction on the skin. I did what any dog owner would. I took a Zyrtec once a day for a whole year. Eventually I stopped and then I became immune to my dog. I was surprised my body was able to build an immunity to my dog but we both chillen now. Lmao

My kid is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts (only one in the family with any food allergies) and successfully the oral exposure therapy to peanuts. It's really a game changer -- he still won't be able to have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but he does not react to micro doses due to cross contamination (ie don't need to worry as much about foods that say "may contain peanuts). His baseline dose is 4 peanuts every day.

Currently doing the same therapy (not FDA approved but under a medical protocol) for cashews and pistachios. He's 5 and has managed the treatments super well - strongly recommend it for anyone struggling with an allergy.
