In response to viewer suggestions, we're planning to make a series of YouTube Shorts (videos less than 1minute long) where we explain some of the secrets of sudoku.

This edition looks at The Y-Wing. You can find a video where the Y-Wing is important here:

Dear god this was such a cleaner explanation than I had heard before. Thank you.

This means R5C5 can't be a 6, right?

Ohhh, I spotted the second one! Love these videos, it really helps me grow and get better at Sudoku!

It's an interesting puzzle. There were about five more Y-wings unfolding once you did the two pointed out on the video. Then the puzzle felt like it was cracking but towards the end I got stuck.

The finish was tricky. I finally noticed that R4C4 being a 1 would make R5C7 a 1 and there would be no place for 1 on row 9. With R4C4 not being 1, there was an X-wing of 1s on R5C3, R9C3, R5C7 and R9C7. All that was required to finish the puzzle I believe.

It's quite difficult to see r9c9 (and r7c9, but that wasn't relevant in this video) on mobile because of the like/dislike controls for YouTube Shorts. It might be an idea to frame future shorts with this in mind?

I love this short. Great example for it, and maybe, just maybe, it is becoming clearer to me ... Thanks for these. I imagine it is just as hard to do a highly-focused and technical short than a Phistomefel in all its glory ... 😊

I remember the first time I caught a bent triple on the app WITHOUT having to get a hint first. Felt amazing. 😅

Thanks. I always struggle to see Y-Wings, but this was a great example so hopefully helps me spot them!

Excellent content as always and as concise as all bobbins.

I'm glad you did one about Y-wings because it's a technique I still have to relearn occasionally!

A Y-Wing is when I run around waving my underpants in the air.

A more direct way of looking at these 3 colored cells is ‘123’ form an XYZ system whereby 3 at r9c9 would eliminate the 3 at both purpled cells leading to1 at r1c9 and 2 at r9c1, resulting in r1c1= 0, a contradiction! Therefore 3 cannot be at r9c9.

Yeah that's the part I get. But I can rarely spot them. If I'm told the central cell of the y-wing I can usually figure it out. but more often than not I have to rely on the smart hint feature to "spot" them for me. I was playing thermo a few days ago and managed to spot a few of them. I felt pretty amazing after that.

Me before this video: knowing bend triples, but not knowing what a Y-Wing is...
Me after this video: now knowing, they're the same thing :D

Nice approach, using these short videos to highlight techniques. I approve.

This is fascinating. I am only just learning these advanced (for me anyway) techniques and it really is amazing! 🙂

I now completely understand this, and wonder how I solved puzzles without using this...Thanks :)
