I love how Anjelah being Mexican & Native and doing a Vietnamese accent isn’t offensive at all! She does it in such a way that is respectful and funny!

Cute videos (both yours and hers)! Thank you for explaining about not using plurals in the monosyllabic lexicon. it all makes perfect sense now! Well, sort of. Kekekek

Don't know why this came up but it's funny, the reaction for the crystal gel was funny!

They are not polite or interested in you for anything more than what they can use you for. they are working you for a tip. You marry their cousin and then the whole family moves into your house and teach you how to serve them.

I've loved this video for years and when I saw a chance to hear comments from a young Vietnamese lady especially a nail technician too well I had to listen. I'm 60 and have seen a lot. You were so great in your review. Not because I agree with you but because of what I didn't know. Things about the Vietnamese culture that were more than just what I observed over the years. I'm now a subscriber.

I used to go to a Vietnamese owned nail salon. The gals were very nice. They would ask me my weekend plans, then complain they married too young and didn't get to have fun.

She did this performance like 15-plus years ago, right? It's amazing what longevity it's had.

Smart, witty, hard working, and a great respect for family! That's my overall impression of Vietnamese people. I think I can say that. I married one! And I love her family just as much. So make jokes, do impressions all you want. But just remember: the joke is probably you!

Yes, she did a great job. One of my favorite bits. Also, she's very sexy. So sure of herself, but still able to be soft (not pushy). I love that.

This thing with building a relationship with your "beauty technician" is also a traditional American thing. For many years we've bantered around the phrase "Only your hairdresser knows" because, well, there are things you might discuss with them that you just can't quite talk about even with your friends. Everyone needs people who don't judge.

My gf, who is VN, told me that one other reason English speaking VN will leave the ess off the end of "plurals" is native speakers of VN actually drop the ends off LOTS of familiar words all the time. The apparent idea is that this makes it easier to say things quickly. If you know a language, context itself helps you clearly understand what word the speaker means. They don't HAVE to say it correctly. If you NEED everything said correctly, there's something wrong with you. Try to keep up. Like that. And God only KNOWS the VN do like to talk FAST.

In American English, there are also a number of shortcuts where, you know, you say the word differently than it's written or, technically, different than is correct. And this is also because it makes it easier to talk. My favorite one, which is spoken absolutely everywhere in the US, is "dudn't." You will hear people say things like, "Dudn't matter." It's a really interesting one. It represents the familiar contraction "doesn't." I have no idea how doesn't possibly became dudn't. But like I say, it's used everywhere.

A really famous example is "choo-taw-bow, Willis?" from American television. Willis was being asked, "What are you talking about?" Amazing how we can condense words down like this and have them still come across as comprehensible. Certain groups in certain regions in the United States didn't exactly get, you know, the best education growing up, or almost maybe sometimes none at all. This left them to sort of make a mess of things when it comes to grammar usage and when it comes to saying words correctly (or really knowing their meanings). A lot of these imperfections, however, are very colorful, and ended up being absorbed into the mainstream culture. In the South, where I grew up, I often heard "cut the light on." Of course, conceptually, you can at least say it makes sense to "cut" a light "off, " which means to flip the light switch downward, "severing" the flow of electricity. Cutting something "on, " however, is insensible. Dudn't matter.
