My grandma had this exact experience in Mexico, she’s fully Mexican but we’re the fair-skinned tall brand. She was getting a pedicure and the woman started out by saying in Spanish, “I bet she didn’t even wash her feet.” My grandma just leaned down and said quietly that her feet were clean because she took a shower that morning, apparently the woman’s face was apology enough lol

I love how nail techs have the audacity to make fun of someone’s “ugly” hands/feet as if it’s not literally their job to make them look nicer

Lol this happened to my mom. She’s white and does not speak anything other than English. My dad (also white) on the other hand was a linguist in the military, Vietnamese being one of the languages he was fluent in. The nail techs were talking smack about my mom’s wedding ring saying it wasn’t real; he nearly gave them a heart attack when he responded, in Vietnamese, saying it was actually real😂

The reason why nail salons to give me so much anxiety. It's because I know they're talking crap about me and I don't understand what they're saying

Hi hi. To all my people with anxiety, I worked as a receptionist where the staff didn’t really speak English, this behavior RARELY happens. Most nail techs are trying to get clients in and out with the best results. If they’re talking, it’s not really anything negative

It's so incredibly easy to not talk shit that I don't feel bad for people who get called out on it. I approach everything with kindness and empathy so when I see someone clearly has anxiety by the state of their hands and nails, I treat them as kindly as possible.

As someone with anxiety who has bitten my nails my whole life, going to a nail salon is definitely the most nerve racking and embarrassing experience. People with ‘disgusting nails’ know they’re disgusting, that’s why they want you to hide them under something beautiful. 😢

I once was shopping at a store with a friend in Cuba, chatting in English and loading up on imported Brazilian snacks. The lady at the register turned to her friend and started badmouthing my friend and I for buying too much and being entitled tourists. I waited til she was done and calmly explained to her in fluent Spanish that we were exchange students living with a local family and attending university to study Spanish, complete with official Cuban IDs. And that the reason I was buying the food was because we were having a beach party with our Cuban friends and since I'm Brazilian I figured I'd get some Brazilian treats as my contribution. The look on her face was priceless. XD

As an Asian girl, whenever I go to a Vietnamese nail salon, the nail techs always always ask me where I am from so that they can make sure they talk sh*t without me understanding 😭😂

I took German classes in high school so I am fluent in German. The other day I went to a new nail salon. The staff seated me and this German nail tech walked in. She took one look at my nails and told her coworker in German: these nails look like they’ve been chewed up by a rat. I understood every word but I still asked her what she said. She told me that she was just telling her to get the supplies. Some time later sh was prepping my nails and my phone rang. It was my friend who took German classes with me. Sometimes we speak to each other in German without explaining, but we never question it. We just go with it. So you can imagine my nail techs shock when she heard me speaking fluent German. This honestly still makes me laugh to this day

Edit: everyone keeps saying “this never happened” and “ur lying” and I just wanted to say that y’all are totally right. This was completely made up and I don’t even know an ounce of German. I just felt like making something up and I decided to keep it up to see how people react lol. Have a nice day.

I’ve been to Vietnam and it was one of my favorite countries because of the people.
I live in N Houston and I bring my disabled mom to get her nails done and every single Vietnamese salon I go to treats her with so much respect. It’s like she is invisible to American culture but around Vietnamese they respect her as an elder and go out of their way to help her.

I’m not Vietnamese I just add fake subtitles under them in my head to make up fake outrageous conversations in my head

Bro I do this all the time. I don’t tell them and see what they say. Sometimes ok, one time they were definitely talking mad shi-, and one time one lady found out later on and slapped my leg while doing my pedicure and asked me why I didn’t say anything earlier. The slap felt personal, like she was my mom lol
