When you spent a lot on ground beef and the USDA says it's okay if it's brownish-grey, but you don't trust that sh*t and that's why you're here.

I'm poor, and my roommate lost her job today. These are the risks we have to take.

My ground beef has grown fur and growled at me when I picked it up. Is it still safe to eat?

when in doubt throw it out....
$3 worth of meat is not worth staying at home or even in the hospital for days....

I feel like this assessment had a lot of contradictions and was not very helpful. “Here’s some brown/gray meat with some red in the middle but it’s still good; and next to it we have some brown/gray meat with some red in the middle and it’s bad” “don’t rely on your nose, but also use the sniff test if it’s brown/gray and you’re not sure”. The only useful distinction was the sliminess of rotten meat.

This helped me! I just opened a pack of small thin steaks and they were all red EXCEPT for where they'd been laying on top of one another. I immediately thought I should toss it, and my brother said to also, but there was no unusual goo on it and it didn't stink either, so I put it in the oven. Broke college student, can only really have red meat once in a blue moon, so you know I didn't want to just toss them without a fight first lol.

How does the middle pack turn into the one on the left? Goes from almost all brownish to bright red in the middle? I don’t understand

Never knew that about the gray bits in the middle!! I hope the cookingguide Kari Underly notices her videos are still getting hits and likes! I buy 73/27% hamburger in 10 lb rolls at Walmart at $2.67/lb, and break it up at home and store in freezer bags. I freeze 1.5 lb blocks for pasta dishes, stroganoff, meatloaf, etc... and make some into 1/3 lb burger patties at 4 patties per gallon Ziplock freezer bag. At times I move a block to the fridge to thaw and cook, or thaw on the counter if planning to cook right away... but sometimes other plans come up, so I stick it back in the freezer for another time. Well, the subsequent re-thawing process turns the outside gray and begins to smell "old" in a day or two but not rotten. That's why I came here looking for the good/bad news on meat that has turned gray on the outside and smells old but not rancid yet. In my experience it won't kill you but it also won't taste the best no matter how much Italian seasoning and black pepper. In this case, I threw it because I just really didn't like the color and questionable smell. Better safe than sorry. Thanks!

i wonder how the First Nations People in Canada prepared their grey meat? A friend tasted some and said it was amazing. Would love to see that recipe as it was not cooked but fermented I imagine.

I left ground beef in the fridge for a week- was too lazy to cook it. It has a weird smell but I made sauce out of it and will let you guys know if I die.
