Electric bikes are becoming more and more popular worldwide, but are subject to strict laws and regulations to make them legal to ride in public. We already know how fun they are to ride, but just how fast can you ride an unrestricted e-bike? We took Hank and Conor to a private race track to compare it to the speed of a road bike.

Cars? Built to go faster than you're allowed to go even on the highway. Bikes? Restricted to the lowest speed limit you'll ever find.

1:08 When it comes the UK and the UE market, it's restricted to 25 km/h, in the US it's restricted to 20 mph.
And then, if you come to Russia, it's restricted to 60 km/h in cities (as a vehicle) because we don't have any restrictions for cyclists.

It was very interesting to see how much faster an e-bike is compared to a regular bike. I'm totally for e-bikes. It expends the pool of people who can ride with me. I'm a strong cyclist and my wife, my kids and a lot of my friends can't keep up with me unless they use an e-bike. It's a win-win. I get to ride with my favorite people and can still get a decent workout. E-bikes are amazing. Thanks to GCN for including the e-bikes in your show.

Think we’ve found our match for Si on the Orbea Ordu TT bike

"Derestricting an e-bike is hard, you shouldn't do it." That was clearly the BBC talking, it's not hard. manufacturers make it really easy and then just don't document it. This is because of draconian laws designed for mopeds, and to insulate motorists.

I do a 50km (round trip) commute in Cape Town (Somerset West to Stellenbosch and back). The hills are steep, and the wind can be quite strong. My Giant Quick E (45km/h or 28 MPH) makes the trip fun and easy, with as much or a workout as I want on the way home (I just turn down the pedal assist and enjoy the workout). But on the way to work it is smooth, fast, and easy.

Now, the flip-side of the e-bike coin: how much SLOWER is an e-bike with the battery depleted? Extra weight and potential motor drag....

Imagine an e-recumbent. The kind of engine and batteries that could fit... Wait I am reinventing the car ;(

A few weeks ago, I cycled from Cape Town to Hout Bay. I am a pretty good climber and had a good time until I was overtaken by a beautiful blonde girl. She kept cycling next to me for a moment and said, "Hi", after which she took off like a rocket, up mountain, mind you. As if I were standing still, my manhood shrank to the size of a pea. At the top she was waiting for me to arrive. When I asked her if she drank kerosene at breakfast, she said with a laugh: "No dude I have an electric racing bike.". I could hug her. Satisfied and confident, I descended.

Amature E-Bike vs Hank Road Bike, is what we actually want

This is a good demonstration that unrestricted (or at least higher speeds) than some places allow, could create a much more compelling argument for car replacement. It starts to get more dangerous, requires a lot more attention, braking, and experience to do safely, but since we must replace cars because of Climate Crisis, I think it should be a serious consideration.

That was unfair. You clearly de-restricted Hank as well!

I thought this was a fantastic demonstration Hank and Conor. It's getting more and more like Top Gear for cyclists. Chapeau to GCN and your creativity.

in Switzerland it's allowed to have a 45km/h s-pedelec, I personally own one called Stromer ST3 and it's very good to commute more than 20kms.
