After living in about ten apartments, I’ll tell you where I would move to if I were to move today. I’ll go over four of the five boroughs. Sorry, Staten Island, but I wouldn’t live there.

I originally moved to NYC for grad school and stayed for 11 years. I lived in Riverdale (my school ran out of grad student housing and ended up buying a condo building there), Harlem and Bed Stuy. If I had the opportunity to move back to NYC, I would look into Brooklyn Heights (my fav NYC neighborhood), Fort Greene, or either back to Bed Stuy or Harlem. For me, crime was everywhere due to the subway, but like you said, be aware of your surroundings and mind your business. If I witnessed any crimes, it was mostly on or near the subway or in areas where tourists typically were.
