I work w dogs in a Humane Society ... most our dogs would not be here if the owners knew a tenth of the stuff in this vid. Best.

i came across this video seeking advice on how to better my relationship with my german shepherd and i am now realizing he is such a good boy. I make him sit on his cot while i fill his bowl with food and even leave his sight in order to get the water but he will not leave his cot until i say go or let’s go and he stares at me and waits for permission. He just recently learned how to stay seated even when the cot isn’t present. He’s a little over a year. This video actually made me realize that i’m being too harsh on myself. I want him to be a great dog but i also need to enjoy him while he’s still a crazy pup!

I think that it's hilarious when the dog jumps on Tom, he looks so offended. He definitely wasn't expecting that. 🤣

Bad part is people usually think that this is just irritating a dog and being mean to him. Showing the food and taking it away etc. People started treating dogs like humans lately which is just not a good thing.

Rules and boundaries, consistency with follow through. Firm, fair and fun. Doesn't matter what you are training it stays the same.

My notes:

1. (Going inside) put dog in sit. Carefully swing open door and praise if she stays. Do it about 3 times and reward/praise if they stay.

2. Use release command like "break." To let them know they can go inside or come out of the sit

3. When finished training with dog, then use release command

(Steps: swing open door, if she stays, praise, then say break to get her out of sit

Your point about not using treats as rewards is so right on. Other trainers on yt constantly are treating and there's no question your method is more sustainable and relationship building focused. Very nice.

It seems that teaching my dog to sit, and to stay sitting, is a very important behavior that needs to be done before teaching other behaviors.

HIS FRONT PAWS ARE LIKE LITTLE TREE TRUNKS, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!

Agree– I don’t use food now that my dog knows basic commands. Praise is the only reward he gets and it is great for us.

Beacon is the BEST boy!! So cute when he was trying to play with you! Love watching GSMD on your channel! Not always the easiest to train, but they’re my ❤ breed.

It doesn't take long to teach this either. Its a great tool for the winter when you're headed out the front door and there's ice and snow on your front steps. Last thing you want is to be pulled down those steps. Thank you Tom!

Thanks so much for this! We adopted two puppies nine years ago, and it's been a while since we had to think about these fundamentals in a structured way. We lost one of our dogs to cancer last year. It was incredibly difficult and unspeakable beautiful to have all the love we shared and trust we built together in her final moments. We recently decided to adopt a new dog and this has been such a helpful reminder and refresher.

I’m definitely going to try this with my new 10 year old dog I just adopted. Thank you Tom!😊

Dear Thomas, I am in School for my Dog Trainer exam in Germany.
I really love your connection to dogs! It’s really inspiring especially since I study Canine, it’s history and behavior!
I can feel your „Aura“ and „charisma“ you send to the dog passiv.. I hope you know what I mean with this, doesn’t know the proper explanation for the word in English. Also it’s great for me to see the different body languages of the dogs! Honestly it’s pretty tough to find a trainer, who is dealing with this kind of dogs in my surrounding. Thank you for letting me learn from you good sir!
Wish you success in what ever level.

OMG....I have been feeding my dog (a Rottweiler) like this from day one 😆 take the bowl to his food mat, have him sit, put the bowl down, have him look at me (not the food) and he can’t eat until I say go ahead. Teaching “leave it” helps so much for so many things!!!!
