My favorite part of this is that it produces pure silicon and you can see that in the end result as the sort of shiny irridencent layer on the inside of the glass.

This is a diet thermite reaction, its a pure metal reacting with an oxide to produce a pure element and the complementary oxide. In this case, the lithium is pulling the oxygen atoms off the silicon dioxide to produce lithium oxide and elemental silicon.
