HOW to CONFESS YOUR SINS

Why do I need to confess my sins? When Jesus died on the cross, he said, “It is finished!” So I’m already forgiven, right?
Well, that’s true: Jesus’ death is all that is needed for you to be forgiven. So confessing our sins must achieve something else. And there’s two things to think about:
Firstly, when we confess our sins to God, we learn to see sin how God sees it.
If we spend some time each day thinking about our sins, we get to think about how we have let God down and how we have hurt other people and how we have not lived our best self.
And it’s important to do that - not so that we get to feel really bad about ourselves and believe that we’re a waste of space - but so that we really appreciate how serious our wrongdoing is and how serious the consequences are.
If we don’t do that, we will start to take wrongdoing lightly and think, “Oh well, it doesn’t really matter.”
And, of course it does matter because our sins hurt God, other people and ourselves.
Secondly, when we confess our sins to God, we realize afresh how Jesus’ death has dealt with everything we’ve done wrong and we become more thankful.
We tell God what we have done wrong that day and we ask him to forgive us and we spend some time thinking about Jesus’ death on the cross through which we are forgiven, and it increases in us a sense of thankfulness for his love.
So it’s not like us confessing our sins is the way in which we are forgiven. No. We are forgiven through the death of Jesus on the cross. But confessing our sins strengthens our relationship with God because we get to see ourselves through his eyes and our gratitude towards him increases.
And as our relationship with God strengthens, we increasingly experience joy and peace and contentment in our lives and increasingly become the person God has destined us to be.
