Making a Good Confession

If you have ever wondered how to make a good confession, Fr. Mike Schmitz has some solid advice for you. He points out that preparing for a good confession starts when we recognize that being a "good person” in our own eyes is not enough—we are called to holiness, which is something much greater. In this video, Fr. Mike offers four powerful ways we can examine our consciences so that our experience of reconciliation moves us towards that holiness to which we are called.

Just had to share this (from a Fr. Mike homily): "When we go to Confession we are not telling God something He doesn’t already know and we’re not showing Him something He doesn’t already see. We are giving Him something He doesn’t already have: Your broken heart."

It’s been many years and have gravely sinned. I’m so scared, I feel physically ill at the thought of going to confession but know I need to go and face up to the wrongs I have committed. Please pray for me to find the courage to return to confession.

I just had my first confession in 12 years. The most honest confession of my life. The experience left me in tears in the most positive way.

God hasn’t been a huge part of my team lately. He’s been sidelined for quite a while. But I think I’m going to work on making him the coach of my team again.

I like my priest but father Mike would be an awesome priest to have.

• “Is God the center of my life?”

• Sin is “I know what you want, God, but I’m going to do what I want.”

4 pieces of advice (a “cheat sheet”) on making a good confession:
1) finding an age- (or-stage-of-life) appropriate examination of conscience
2) The Litany of Humility
3) The Beatitudes
4) St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Daily Examen

Thank you Fr. Mike! The message of your videos is always so good.

I love when Fr. Mike says a Confession is a place for victory, returning to Jesus! I think this is so true, so many Catholics are afraid of confession, but you don't need to be. This is such a wonderful sacrament we have, its freeing and if you do it consistently it makes a difference in your life.

God bless Fr. Mike and others like him. As a Roman Catholic, I can honestly say there are TOO FEW priests who do confession as Fr. Mike teaches. Keep up the good work Father!!!

I went to Reconciliation Tuesday service and had my first confession in 7 years. I feel fantastic. Father John helped me through it and it was so worth the 45 minute wait. Do it as soon as possible is my advise. Don’t put it off. 💜✝️

I am a Baptist but I loved this video especially the part where you say you love confession because it brings people back to Jesus. What a wonderful way of putting it and how very true.

I want to thank Fr. Mike for clarifying the difference between “mistake” and “sin” - this is extremely liberating and validating for me. Thank you for that grace.

I believe confession is a great and wonderful gift that us Catholics have. When I go to confession I receive the gift of forgiveness, a great amount of peace and a new beginning. It is like starting all over again without sin. If people new and understood the great power of confession, the church would be packed too capacity..

I am looking forward to being able to participate in confession once I complete my sacraments(all but baptism). I love your videos. I was raised Baptist and have come to the Catholic Church in an unexpected way. My husband who is baptized catholic asked I go to Catholic Church when I wanted to take our boys(he now comes also, prayed about that one a lot at Mass) so I decided to give it a try. I went with a closed heart thinking there was no way I would find Jesus there. I left filled with the Holy Spirit and loving the Priest. I had a strong faith in Christ when I was young and was baptized. Now I see what I’ve been missing for years and found it where I least expected. God works in wonderful and mysterious ways. God bless you.
