Confession is transformative and healing. As a former 46 year Protestant, I can personally attest to this. I never felt so liberated in my life… and it not only helped me eliminate certain long-standing besetting sins, it has helped heal me from the shame and guilt of past sins.

The first time I went to confession, I had a sin I was holding onto that was hard to confess.
It took me 12 years to finally have enough bravery to confess this sin.
When I finally did confess this sin, I shed tears so much I couldnt stop crying.
I had been granted the gift of Contrition.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise” (v. 17).

This video reminded me to go to confession soon. I do like Trent's bonus point/reason to confess our sins to a priest: it is comforting. That is so true. I think human psychology makes us want and need to tell others about even the bad things in our life. Also, Trent, I commend how you consistently and abundantly support your arguments or reasons with solid evidence (scripture, quotes from saints of the past, logical reasoning, etc.)

The last bonus reason should not be minimized. The practice of self examination and then being accountable to a confessor helps us avoid rationalizing our sins and faults. Also we might feel that a sin is unforgivable but the advice of the priest, absolution, and opportunity for penance assure us of God's love and forgiveness.

God doesn't need to hear our sins for His sake.

WE need to hear our sins for our sakes. Because it's by confessing those sins vocally, by giving words to our sinful actions and proclivities, that they literally become "real" in our consciousness.

And it is in fact courageous and a total act of humility that is pleasing to God to confess your sins to another person who you know is no less sinful than you are.

I find it difficult sometimes to say my sins aloud. In the act of doing so, I must confront what I have done; I have to hear it as I say it. And knowing that there is someone physically there with me to hear them as well makes them unavoidable. But once the words are out, to then hear audibly that, through Jesus, I am forgiven them - wow! There is no other feeling like it in the world.

So many doctrines of the Catholic Church predate the official canon of the Bible: the church, mass, confession, baptism, etc. I don’t understand why anyone would conclude that sola scriptura is the ultimate authority.

Baptism removes original sin. However, our wounded nature by the stain of sin has left us inclined to sin, which is why God gave us the precious sacrament of cofession by which he restores his sanctifying grace to us.
