I was able to solve the equation. YAY! I solved it the longer way of plugging x and y without the subtraction method. I came up with x = 3/8 * (3y + 1) and y = 1 - 4/5 * x. Plugging and chugging with both equations also gives x = 15/19 and y = 7/19. I plugged those numbers into both original equations, and they worked.

Thank you for a nice question and a clear explanation. Just a pity that the answers are not simple ones. For example in your second equation, the 8y could be replaced by 4y.

On equating power two simultaneous equations come
4x + 5y = 5
8x - 9y = 3
can be solved for the values of x & y
