Why doesn’t Hori just make a controller... seriously. Huge missed opportunity.

Ordered one of these controllers via eBay when you first showed it off and as soon as I got it I tried several d-pads from a couple SNES clone controllers. No matter which ones I tried I couldn't get any of their d-pad/membranes to function 100% correctly (mainly not being able to press down without using an abnormal amount of force). Eventually just pulled out an old original SNES controller that died on me years ago and put that d-pad/membrane in (had to use a handheld electric rotary tool to modify (grind down) the sides of the d-pad to make it just small enough to fit correctly). It works perfectly and a lot better than the original d-pad that came with the controller. Been replaying Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance as a test for the new d-pad and haven't had a single problem yet so I'm pretty happy about using this instead of the original Hori controller.

Can you share a link for the small screen you are using ?

What a great video. You are definitely correct about the Dpad on the old skool controller. However your genius ideas work awesome for upgrading the controller to make it almost as good as the original Hori controller. I found that the SFC controllers that were made before 1992 usually have the dpad that will fit the old skool controllers. That official Nintendo silicone pad under the dpad works perfectly and the SFC L and R buttons feel more comfortable and responsive than the standard old skool ones….the metal bar makes the difference I guess.

The Wii U d-pad seems to work pretty good with the Old Skool controller even with the Old Skool membrane.

I sanded down the edge with 100 grit on the OG SNES D-Pad, then cleaned it up with 500 grit after it fit. Works great now.

I actually have a Hori, so this was interesting seeing what it looked like on the inside! Glad there's an alternative finally!

This controller can actually be pretty amazing with a few super simple mods: I highly recommend swapping the stock dpad/membrane with an OEM Wii Classic Controller dpad/membrane, the difference is night and day.

The reason I even tried this was because I first wanted to do it with an OEM SNES dpad/membrane, but the dpad just wouldn't fit inside the old skool controller shell.

If you even wanna go further I also recommend swapping the L/R shoulder membranes with ones from an OEM SNES controller.

Picked up one of these thanks to your video. Ended up taking it apart and replaced the Dpad with one from a SNES-mini controller, had to sand down the Dpad a bit to get it to fit in there. Also had an issue getting the SNES-mini Dpad membrane to fit so I had to use the one that came with the Old Skool clone unfortunately. Tried putting in triggers as well but the poles on the SNES-mini are too big. I have some spare OEM SNES and Super Famicom controllers so I may open those up and try to use parts from there to further mod the Old Skool clone. Overall though it's a great controller, very happy with it. Thanks again for the videos, been waiting years for a cheaper alternative to the Hori pad

Iam so god damn happy this alternative to the horipad exists now!

P.S.
I was the guy from canada that bought dreams from your shop,
over all I highly recommend your store.

*One small criticism though:*
you packed the game to tightly resulting in me cutting into the front plastic on the case by accident,
I recommend leaving a bit of room to cut into.

My D-pad wouldn't register the down input unless I pressed harder than normal. I think these D-pad issues happen because the shell castings on the Old Skool controllers are not of great quality. Mine had extra plastic on top of the screw posts which put unnecessary pressure on one side of the board so I had to sand it off. Tightening the screws all the way was also the culprit and loosening them just a bit made it function just as good as any Nintendo OEM D-pad. This is just from personal experience but I feel all of these controllers suffer from the same shell casting quality.

A part to part teardown of the controller, makes it simpler to fix the fault.

The Old Skool and a broken SNES controller is still cheaper than the HORI one. Now I need a USB version (with improved dpad).

Hori controller at the price has basically just become a collectors piece at that price. The Old Skool controller is perfect for the $20 it costs

the problem with oldskool and 3rd party dpad rubber replacement is the conductive carbon on the rubber isnt wide enough so diagonal is harder to press.
