Hi everyone!

My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about spaying your dog. When should you spay your dog. There is a lot of disagreement about when to spay a dog.

Please support to channel by buy stuff for your fur baby through my amazon store. These are a few of my favorite pet toys and products.

The big question is do you wait a heat cycle or two before spaying. There is not a clear cut answer.

The reasons to spay before the first heat cycle are all medical. There is a study that talks about reducing mammary or breast cancer in the female dog. Veterinarians believe that if a dog is spayed before the first or second heat cycle there is a great reduction in the chances of mammary or breast cancer in the dog.

Also, a veterinarian may want to spay earlier to prevent pyometra or an infected uterus which is common in the dog. With each heat cycle the chances of a pyometra or infected uterus does increase. As a veterinarian I have seen pyometra or an infected uterus during the first heat cycle.

The reason a pet parent may want to wait a heat cycle is allow for the normal hormones to help develop the female dog. This will help the body mature with the progesterone spike and the estrogen changes from the heat cycle.

What about secondary issues such as atypical Cushings? Is this also related to timing, or is it due to hormonal changes no matter when the procedure is done? Thank you!!

Stop unwanted pregnancies by getting your male dog a vasectomy and your female dog a partial spay. A partial spay involves removing the uterus, but not the ovaries. The surgery is much safer, because the main arteries are located after the ovaries. While your dog still comes into heat every six months (or so), she doesn't give off much of a scent to attract males because the scent is produced in the uterus. Also, she doesn't bleed during heat without a uterus. It is the best of all options. I don't want a eunuch for a dog - I want a male or female dog. And that is what I get.

Hey Doc! Like you said there’s pros and cons as far as timing. I highly encourage ppl to do their own research before deciding on when it’s the right time. That being said I recommend waiting as they need their hormones to grow properly and healthy. Depending on the breed size their growth plates don’t closed until 18-22 months in large/giant. Another hard question to ask yourself is are you a very responsible owner. It only takes a few seconds for dogs to breed and tie so if you won’t keep your dog on leash through her cycle and never let her loose even in your fenced yard then fix her.

My dog was spayed this morning
She's 3 has had heat cycles every 6 months or so
Always acted like a false pregnancy, milk gland swelling and leaking milk
Usually went back down but not entirely
Last heat milk glands got very large and never went down
My vet called me after the surgery and told me she had no cists on her ovaries
But they were abnormal in size
Could you explain to me what exactly this means?
Thank you very much doctor

My dog is at least 9 years old is it safe to have her still spayed she’s inside a 6ft fence I do not plan on breeding her at that age but she has a huge cyst that will grow larger when hotter weather changes then even though it’s still there it shrinks come cooler weather I’ve got to get the cyst removed before it decides to ruptures and causes her death she looks miserable wagging it around plus she has horrific ear infections but if I’m not going to let her get pregnant at age 9 is the spay even worth it I just pray this cyst is not cancerous

Doctor, hello. Please tell me if you have a video on your channel about what to do with the fear of dogs on the street? Many owners walk with their large pets without a muzzle and a leash. After the incident with the bite, psychologically you expect it from every dog you meet. What should I do?

Pretty funny. I rescued a dog from a shelter age of dog was 3 to 5 yrs old. They just got the dog fixed just before I picked the dog up. Seem you got to blame cancer on something. Instead of other things like pharmaceuticals and big food companies with all the by product put in the food. Just like people doctors. Not our fault your sick. Keep shifting the blame. All about the money

We had a Setter that died from pyo a few months ago. Never really knew much about it. Nasty business. So now we have our 11 year old Maltese mix booked to be spayed in 2 weeks time. Vet says her age isn't a problem and that it's best she's done. He's going to clean her teeth while she's still under. I'm sick with worry though. She's never had a health problem up till now. I'm worried she'll start to get things wrong with her after. What about incontinence?

I think anyone who get's their pet that they say they love so much spayed or neutered don't actually love that pet but have it for their own selfish reasons. How can you say you love your pet and have a vet take it's reproductive organs out? What do you call a male or female dog or cat that had it done? They become genderless because you took out what actually makes them male or female. What if a higher form of life did this to humans? Animals have feelings too and just as humans love the feelings that you get when having sex, animals do too. I actually thought when your animal get's spay or neutered they just tie tubes but I recently got a rescue dog from a shelter and they neutered him before the adoption took place so I didn't have a choice in the matter. When I looked at his genital area to see how he was healing and saw that he no longer had testicles, I thought it was the most appalling, inhumane thing I have ever seen in my life. I would never chose to have my pet spayed or neutered cause I don't want to take that away from the pet I love not to mention it shouldn't be an option. Some people might argue that it controls their population well what if someone controlled human population?
