Engineers beyond engineering -- the art of being an engineer: Philippe Rival at TEDxImperialCollege

Показать описание
There needs to be a new way of considering the engineering profession. Philippe is an engineering student at Imperial College, and believes there is a real need for engineers to actively participate in global debates, and to develop the ability to communicate the innovations they produce.

This new way of thinking comes in the context of a world with increasing demand for local-scale engineering and solutions that can be applied everywhere.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Glad to know that there's someone who's on the same page as me in this "engineering problem". Such a passionate speech!

In my experience, many of the students I've had to work with were very competitive. Trying to impress the professors academically and socially. It works, too. Obviously. I'm not sure that's a bad thing either, it just makes it very difficult to work with some of these people. It makes it impossible to be fully honest about problems in the curriculum, project, team, and most importantly yourself. No longer can you honestly admit your weaknesses in hopes of bringing better success to the project. No longer can you ask for help from you peers. Every bit of honesty you put out into my community will only make you look.

In my opinion, having to compete in any way other than character and ability is the problem.

This has helped me so much! As a third year chemical engineering student who loves to learn new things outside the classroom I often go to events/talks/clubs. Sometimes I have to miss class or study sessions for this and my friends look at me like I don’t care about college and I am not responsible or commited. The thing is that through this congresses/talks/events I meet so many new, inspiring, eye opening people that help me see the world in a different way. I sometimes doubt myself for missing class however this talk for me was a reinforcement that all of this will be in the future what will set me apart from everyone else carrying the same degree. I can’t thank you enough! ❤️

Social skills. Success in engineering is more than math and science and grade. Your communication, outside the box thinking, and leadership skills is what will carry you to succeed in the world outside of college :)

Good luck guys!!

Very good video and very very important video. I always felt so alone being communicative, social and interested in multiple other things a person might think is the opposite of engineering for example drawing. But this speech made me feel better. Also to everyone feeling the same right now. Look at some of the most famous engineers. They also didn´t commit their lives only into engineering. They were more. Artists, mathematicians, physicians and studied multiple things

Engineering is a role that promotes and relies on creativity, deep thinking, and endurance. People break down your endurance, people challenge you, people and group undermine individual thinking, many oppose creativity and criticize. For those reasons I believe engineers or at least I myself don't enjoy most social gatherings, unless they are with high quality people and we have shared goals.

Glad to be listening to this speech, what he says is true. To do something meaningful, is not about being the smartest or, the more logical is something as complex as we humans are.

This was such an interesting video! I like the new take on a profession that should not be set in stone.

Excellent Philippe! I think that a passionately curious and knowledge thirsting engineer can be great in anything he tries to do, not just his field. What do you think?

I thought just because I don't desire to sit and crunch numbers ALL the time, I don't qualify to be an engineer.... Maybe not....

I think the one problem with his story is that you always get people that are in engineering in the 1st and second year. After that you get all of the people who didn't get weeded out.
