UNION, NEW JERSEY — A New Jersey woman has been charged with making fake threats against black students at Kean University to raise awareness about racism.
NJ.com reports that Kayla-Simone McKelvey is accused of posting a series of tweets threatening black students at a university rally on racial issues at the university two weeks ago, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced on Tuesday.
The Union County prosecutor's office says McKelvey, 24, took part in a Nov. 17 rally on racial issues at Kean but left in the middle of the demonstration and went to a computer station in a campus library. There, she allegedly posted threats against black students under the Twitter handle @keanuagainstblk.
"i will kill all the blacks tonight, tomorrow and any other day if they go to Kean university," read one of the tweets, which were screen-captured by NJ.com.
"theres a bomb on your campus," read another.
She then allegedly returned to the rally and tried to raise awareness about the threats.
McKelvey, a black alum who graduated in May, is scheduled to appear in court in two weeks.
University officials said about 100 students participated in the rally on campus that night, while 10 students slept overnight under the school's clock tower.
The school released a statement saying it was "saddened" to find out a that former student and rally participant was allegedly behind the threats.
McKelvey, of Union Township, faces one count of creating a false public alarm, which has a maximum three to five-year sentence.
