Ever wonder what would happen if you froze and energy drinks?!?!? Well, come on now, we've all been there at one point or another. We've wanted to taste the sweet nectar of a new energy drink that just came in the mail. Its been promoted for weeks and FINALLY it has arrived, BUT... they are all warm! What do you do??? More below

What to do, what to do??? You can't wait 3-4 hours for them to get cold in the fridge! You decide to toss it in the freezer for maybe 30 minutes? An hour? Yeah, that should be good. But is it? We all get busy, we all lose track of time, we all get distracted. Would we set an alarm? Nah, how could we forget about our precious energy drink in the freezer? Then your friend calls to go out, your family has an emergency, something...anything... comes up and you forget your energy drink in the freezer. After 24 hours, you remember... what happened to it?

What happens when you freeze energy drinks??? Or for that matter, what happens when you freeze soda or any other carbonated drink? In this video, I not only talk about the science about what happens when you freeze and energy drink, but I also put one in the freezer!!! We will actually see what happens when it freezes!!!

Wet a paper towel. Wrap your warm drink with the wet towel and throw it in the freezer for 15 minutes and it will come out ice cold.

i remember freezing the blueberry and that led to the water freezing but the blueberry flavor turned into a thick syrup

when the carbonation builds, it goes to the sides of the can, even without freezing. This is why before opening a can of any carbonated drink, instead of tapping the top, like some do, tap the sides near the top instead. All the carbonation bubbles will go to the top, and you can open it without the pressure pushing the drink out like a middle school water fountain.

I work professionally as a master brewer of Belgian style beer and I have formal and traditional training in the art of fermentation (zymurgy) so I thought I'd chime in on this as I've experienced this in a much larger scale in a brewery setting (more about that in a bit) .

Explosions in carbonated beverages when exposed to long periods of freezing temperatures is a result of something called "Charles' Law" - which means that pressure in a fixed volume of liquid is proportional to temperature. While Co2 is more soluble in liquids at cold temperatures than it is at warm temperatures (because at colder temps, Co2 is a liquid, but at warm temps, it is a gas), when a carbonated liquid is frozen, ice crystals try to expel the Co2 into any available headspace to increase the pressure offset by the Charles Law effect. And because the expansion of liquid water to ice is nearly 10%, that displacement of Co2 can be very dramatic. This is what results in exploding cans in the freezer. These ice crystals are also the cause of ingredient separation that's sometimes seen when freezing some beverages.

Now about my personal experience with Charles Law. We have 10bbl (310 gallon) "brite" tanks that we carbonate and clarify our beer in. These are stainless steel tanks with integrated glycol jackets for temperature control. One day, one of the controller units that controls the glycol output based on the temperature that is set died on us. Apparently it happened in the middle of the night on a Saturday because I came in Friday and the while tank of beer was frozen solid. But there was also a HUGE mess on the ceiling and floor from beer spewing out of the pressure relief valve when Charles Law was taking effect and ice crystals were forcing out Co2 through the top of the brite tank.

We had to dump that batch of beer once it was thawed (freezing also promotes bad oxidation and kills stability of the product) and replaced the bad control unit. But it was basically a much larger version of leaving an energy drink in the freezer. But 310 gallons instead of 16 oz. lol Anyway, thought I'd share some science and this story with you. Cheers!

This video is actually genius. It's exactly how you make something as simple as exploding energy drinks in the freezer and makes it 10 minutes long.

THIS IS YOUTUBE!

Such a great video! This was so relatable, as I drink my energy drinks in portions, so I pour it in a thick glass bottle (cap on, but not too tight) and place it in the freezer for (at most) 30 minutes. You get a slight frozen layer at the top and (for me) I felt the carbonation level was amplified, as well as the flavor.

Good video man! Love these science/informational videos. And wow!! Lots of energy drinks and such but that’s to be expected for the caffeine man! Lol have a good Labor Day! (Also those icicles can be a good summer snack haha)

Omgsh your too funny! Absolutely subscribed my friend! I was cracking up watching this! You must have a lovely wife that she lets you explode things in her freezer😉, although you did the responsible thing and used a baggie. Anyway I'm also an energy drink junkie. I've tried darn near every brand and always end up going back to kiwi cherry venom. Unfortunately it's 220 calories per can! I keep trying to quit it, but always end up going and buying more due to my hectic schedule demands and need to keep going even when tired:) There's only so much coffee a person can drink! Thanks & takecare!

Have you tried the Full Throttle series of energy drinks? There actually, in my opinion, really good and really unique. Anyway, keep up the great work CaffeineMan!!

I like to use the 16 oz yeti for it as well sometimes I put both in the freezer at the same time some distance apart from each other. I used to put it on the cam before chilling and it took way longer lel

My coworker left a Rockstar zero carb in the freezer at work. Heard a loud boom and opened the freezer to find the can split open and the entire freezer was covered in pink ice!
