Why Does Apple Slow Down Older iPhones?

Apple has admitted to slowing down older iPhones. Is this corporate nonsense, reasonable maintenance, or something in between?

Still rocking with my Samsung Note 3, just replaced the battery yesterday for $10 and it runs like new. No need for a "professional assistance", f*** phones without removable back cover.

I can see the technical reasoning for it. What is generally unacceptable is the lack of transparency. I think a little bit of communication would have been helpful, at the very least.

This is one of the biggest reasons why I bought a V20 as my latest upgrade last year—the removable battery will let me use it for years to come, with no issues with how to replace the battery.

It is probably not an Apple exclusive problem that the battery gets weaker over time but only Apple does this. If they were so worried about their customers, why don't they include some sorta warning toggle? If Apple was just caring about their customers, they had informed them instead of artificially slowing down their Phones which makes more inclined to buy a new phone instead of swapping the battery.

Albeit that, up to the point when battery is too weak to power the SOC, it is already apparent the battery has degraded, that is probably why other manufacturers don't do such things.

In case premature degradation is an Apple exclusive problem, it is a design flaw and supports the idea of planned obsolescence. Did it ever ocure to Linus that planned obsolescence is something hard to prove ultimately?

Just let the batteries overload and die so that people will know to replace the battery once its actually time to. Rather than slow down phones causing frustrations for those who's batteries are brand new.

4:00 This is unfair. My phone is just as thin as an iPhone and it has a replaceable battery. The reason why the battery has a measly 1300 mAh capacity is because my phone has a 4" screen. And besides, it's just all planned obsolescence that Apple (and other companies) use non-user-replaceable batteries in their tech gadgets. It's a real shame, so you're lucky to find a higher-end smartphone with a replaceable battery. You're even luckier to find a laptop with a replaceable battery these days. If you want a phone with a replaceable battery, go check out Wiko. 13/25 of Wiko's phones have replaceable batteries.
