I took online psychotherapy last year until my last psychologist (from my home country) told me that in my condition (depression) I need medication, and without it our therapy would be almost useless. So I told her that I will come back as soon as I get medication, and we both didn’t know that it could be a problem in Germany. But it took me about 8 months to do this. It’s just 8 months of wasted life😢. It’s very hard to do anything in this condition, and this situation in Germany just prevents people from getting back to normal life. Fortunately, I managed to get to the psychiatrist a month ago. Now I am taking medication and feel much better.

If you are already diagnosed somewhere else in Germany, you can present existing diagnosis and consultation records to your new doctor and he/she would be able to take it from there as well.

Glad you're making a video on this topic. Very important for many individuals, especially folks who are often overwhelmed living here. I don't think I'd have made it this far without seeing my psychiatrist at uni once a month or so for over a year. I didn't have to pay anything out of my pocket as I'm a student at the university but that's coming to an end soon (hopefully) and I might still want to seek out help regarding my personal issues with depression

Thanks a lot for this video.
Just as a pointer for those who have already been in touch with a therapist in another country: if it is just about consultation, not medicine, it seems there is a chance to continue therapy online with that therapist. It is super-duper bureaucratic, but it seems to be possible.

I got a diagnosis in Mexico and of course psychiatrists in Germany don’t accept it… also very hard to find a psychiatrist that is into the public system and having place, most of them are full. 😢 I just payed for a psychiatrist myself when I needed it.

This is very helpful. My wife needs ongoing therapy and medication. Good to know before we move there.

Great that you thought about this aspect as well ! just a quick point (if relevant). of course the website for registered practitioners is public but pls do take care about this - in case you are showing examples, try blurring names, identities / photos. Just don want anyone to pick this up 😅

It also should be stressed that psychologists / therapists in Germany are not allowed to prescribe psychiatric medications.
To get such medication you need to see a psychiatrist. In some mild, simple cases your family practitioner is allowed to prescribe some. But never the “heayy stuff”.

Oh - you did cover the medication issue towards the end …

Recently many people I meet have (or most likely think they have) ADHD. The social media generation. No wonder why there is a correlation.
