Learn Morse Code - Lesson 5

Today we are taking a break from learning letters so that we can exercise a little bit of what we learned. If you have diligently worked through lessong 1 through 4 and have reviewed them frequently, you may skip this one, but I would highly encourage you to take the time to exercise your new skill at instant character recognition.

These videos should be watched in sequential order as they are additive and build on each other.
BEFORE you watch this video, MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE PRIOR VIDEOS.

INSTANT CHARACTER RECOGNITION IS THE KEY!
Use this video as many times as you need to practice the first 4 groups of letters: E, T, A, N, I, M, K, R, D, G, U, W, O, S, C and H

If you are looking for the letters used in this practice, these are the two groups of 73 letters (Cheat Sheet):
- Group 1: SKKRUMGOATSUGARKNOCKMIDUNITEDRACKMOUNTEDWEENGSTEAMSNOWCATDOGWACKOWRICK
- Group 2:
DUCKGEEKCOWAWISTRVCKWIDOWMAKERWINDOWMOCKINGSMOKERDOWNSTREAMCORKGECKO

That second group was tough - did you catch the "V" in that group? Hopefully you just ignored it and kept moving on.

As mentioned in other videos, if you want to really learn Morse Code, check out CW Ops or Long Island CW Club....
... but if you dont want to commit and want to take a casual - no commitment approach to learning - this might be a good way to go.

Let me know if these videos help. Im committed to help folks learn Morse Code, so I welcome any feedback.

CW on my friends!

After several tries and stops, your videos have taken me further than I have gotten with others, BIG THANK YOU!!! I did like it when you would sound out the letters by saying dit and dah when you first introduce it. You were doing that in the beginning and stopped. I am a little hard of hearing and at first it is hard for me to pick up the tones until I look at it on a chart, then I seem to be able to pick up the sound. Thanks again, these have been a great help in my journey to learn CW.

That was great!
I sat at my radio and not only practiced instant letter recognition, but also SENT the letters directly after hearing them from you! It was great ‘head-copy’ practice and sending as well!!!
Thanks!

thanks for the video. I'm about to throw in the towel on morse code. I thought I was doing good, until this. Tomorrow I'll review all 4 lessons and try lesson 5 again. Been at these lessons for over a month now, so I'll give it one more try tomorrow... then walk away. You may have saved me valuable time I would have wasted learning (or trying to) more letters and future lessons. Very sad.

This was a great lesson for me. When checking how I did against the key, I found a couple letters that I consistently miss. Now I know to work on those letter some more. I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped but I’ve come a long way since lesson #1. Thank you for doing this!

Oh, that's a beautiful key. I hope I get good enough at Morse to be worthy of a key that beautiful.

Thanks Again ! It's really helping me ! I'm quite pleased how I did on the first group . But the second group although I got some words it all got a bit too quick ! I will persevere on this video before I move to Lesson 6 😊

loving this course, I find this easier than formal lessons-got a question, what percentage should I be getting right before I move forward to the next lesson? ie this lesson I'm getting about 80% ish correct, is this enough to move on to the next lesson?

I enjoyed that a lot! I recently joined LICW and was able to copy your letters pretty well. Except for the V, lol. Would you mind sharing a link to the key? Thanks again!

Nice lesson. I'm up to lesson 9 on LCWO, but I've previously learnt all letters using morse mania app on my phone. I was able to spot the V and copy it 😅

It would be good to know what the effective speed was of that last group. I guess I can work it out, hold on.

This has given me a ton of confidence in what I've already learnt! Thank you!

I am having trouble differentiating the sound of the R and W. They sound so close and its hard to tell the difference.

About how many WPM do you guys think the second set of letters was sent? Yes, I know it wasn't the entirety of the alphabet and numbers, but that rate is about all I can do atm.
