Before the Caliphate’s Rise there was 2 Empires, the Eastern Roman Empire and the Sassanid Empire. They have a history of warfares against each other. After the Mutiny of Phocas and the declaration of war by the Sassanids. Both side clashed. Emperor Phocas proven to be an incompetent emperor so a Roman General, Priscus sent a letter to the Exarch (Governor) of Africa. Heraclius the Elder but he was too old so he sent his son instead. His son the Heraclius would go on to overthrow Phocas and would go on to undone sassanid invasions with the help of the Turkic Nomads. It would be known as the Roman-Sassanid war of 602-628.
Both sides were severely weaken like severely. Fortunate for the Romans, They won so they managed to regain lands and partially restored stability in the east (the western troops were depleted which led to slavic invasions but not important for this story) however we couldn’t say about the Sassanids tho. They entered the state of civil wars (628-632) right on the time of the Muslims to consolidate and began their massive invasions. Both empires did not recover from the previous wars combined with Heraclius’s mental decline. The Romans would be defeated but not destroyed. The Persians were fully destroyed. However the Romans would persist from time to time until the resurgence under the Macedonian Emperors (863-1056) which led to the partial recovery of roman power.
