My top tip is to get students speaking as much as possible! This usually means students working together in pairs or small groups, instead of the entire class.

Great video! As a TESOL course provider the most important tip I like to give my graduates is: Focus on your connection with the students. From that everything else springs.

I am so glad to have found you! I'm a regular ed. teacher working on my ESL endorsement while tutoring ESL students in an after-school program. I am excited to earn my certification and my own classroom. I can tell you are going to be a wealth of information! I just joined the Facebook communities you suggested, and can't wait to see what else I'll learn from you! Thanks!

Thank you so much for this video. I will be teaching ELA in High School soon. This is my first time to teach in US and I am in a state of mixed feelings.

9:55 For me, this took about 3 weeks. I teach in a K-5 school. So, most of the potential ELLs will always be in kindergarten. And I want to say thanks for posting the advice on being good to oneself, working on one thing, & getting your classroom management down pat. I'm a first year ENL teacher who pulls out & pushes in, & keeping up with my planning is challenging. But my principal has noted that I have strong relationships with my students (even though some of them still misbehave) & I think that comes from my classroom management style. If you don't have classroom management down & address behavior, then it's hard for all to learn. After hearing that from you, I feel better about my practice & future as a teacher.

I just watched this video for the first time. Thank you so much! I'm working on my ESL K-12 endorsement at Idaho State University. I was supposed to have 40 hours of ESL field experience this semester, but due to COVID restrictions it was all cancelled and substituted with online activities. This loss of the field experience opportunity is creating anxiety for me because I still don't know what being an ESL teacher "looks like". Your video provided me with some badly needed information!

Hello and thank you so much for this video. This will be my first year as a newly graduated TESOL teacher. I will be working in a middle school. As of yet, I have no information on what classes I will be teaching. As I listen to your video, I am not even sure how I will get to engage with my students. This experience is so new and so intimidating.
