In this episode of ‘Cars That Made The 90s’, we caught up with Sean, a proud Volkswagen Golf GTi 16v owner, Peter, the lucky owner of a rare Renault Clio Williams 3, and Dave, a Ford Fiesta RS Turbo fanatic.

The nineties was truly the era of the Hot Hatch. While the concept itself was born in the mid ‘70s with the Golf GTI, and the actual words made famous (or should that be infamous?) in the ‘80s with the introduction of many ‘originals’ like the Escort RS Turbo, Renault 5 GTT, Astra GTE and Peugeot 205 GTI.With these cars becoming more affordable, and with second and third generation models hitting the streets, the ‘90s is where the Hot Hatch went mainstream.

You should do this with many more episodes! Coupes hardly exist anymore, the 90, s had some great ones, even if the SEC is a 80’s car, but C124, the 850 BMW, and many more.

GT’s? Estates? Convertibles and roadsters are dying out as well. Actually even estates are. I hope you will keep going, I just discovered you tonight, and going through all the 90’s episodes, love it!

Used to own an EG6 with slight modifications, amazing car. I felt like I lost part of my soul when I had to sell it. Now I own an EP3 and it is quite similar experience. Amazing cars. Would love to try Clio 197 or Fiesta ST, maybe a Megan RS too. I have owned a lot of cars over the years and I think most of the fun factor comes from the suspension setup and gearing. Tires make a big difference as well. If you know what you are doing, you should be able to turn a saloon or coupe or estate into a fun enjoyable platform. A lot of people overlook ordinary cars and dismiss them, due to lack of pedigree, but you can transform almost everything into a an enjoyable ride.

I would give anything to go back in time to see the day my mum and nana was driving my red fiesta rs turbo 😆 to mum it was just a fiesta and she had the 1ltr ones in the past. Driving my works van to see them 2 just plodding down the road still makes me smile now.. and I guess proves it was an everyday car

Although I almost got killed in a 205 GTi, I still remember the feeling of driving it, and then I felt guilty because I realise that I killed it instead of it almost killing me, D*mm! if only I had more skill driving it back then

I’m 20 and man, am I sad I missed out on a whole 3 generations of cars that I’ve grew up to fell in love with. Me and my mate constantly debate over the new M3/ porche / newer comfortable cars vs the old school monsters and I’m sorry ale pal but I’m taking any old school hot hatch over an M140I IDK if it’s brand new 😂

I am sorry but when you think of hot hatches you think of Renault, no one else come close to sheer lunacy of manny hot Renaults from the past.Even today on Nurburgring it seems that everyone is driving Renault 265 cup or Trophy R.

There's a lot of cheesy opinions from these owners, because everyone has the most nostalgia for the era they grew up in, and every generation will say that the cars of their youth were better, more connected, simpler etc. Personally I love 80's cars because manufacturers were adding turbos to everything so they were raw, crude and full of character. I love 90's cars because It's the peak of engineering before electronics completely took over, but they are reliable and still very approachable by the home mechanic. Modern hot hatches are too dull because you just point and squirt and let the traction control, automatic gearbox, and variable everything do it for you.

Wish these videos covered more cars, they dont do the 90s enough justice. There was just so much cars and variety out there.

To name a few more

Peugeot 306, 106 GTI
Citroen Saxo, Xantia VTR, AX GT
Honda Civic Si, VTI, Jordan Civic, Ek9 Type R
Mitsubishi Colt Cyborg
Daihatsu Charade GTTi
Mazda 323 2.0 V6 ZXi, 323 gt-r
Nissan Pulsar GTir, Almera GTi
Proton satria gti

Just to name a few. Some of these were motorsport derived or homologated. Something we rarely see today.

Good old days😢

Don’t think a Golf Gti should be compared to the Clio or Firsta
The other two smash the Golf out of the water
