In this video i show you how to wire up a Delco 3 wire alternator. This wiring should work for vehicles too. Took me a while to get back to this video because i had problems finding a good gas engine. I plan to do more updates on this. Thanks for watching.

Hi enjoyed watching your videos. It gave me the knowledge to enspire me to build a backup up off grid 12v charging device. Used a second hand 100 amp alternator, cycle turbo trainer, old jump lead switches etc. Basically I can pedal in high gear with little stress on Crank & alternator rotation. Pushing rear wheel by hand has alternator pulley & rear wheel rotating freely. Obviously when exciting you can feel load slightly but you can cycle immediately in high gear. Tyre, inner tube & turbo trainer tiny freewheel resistance roller removed. Belt goes round backwheel & alternator. Turbo trainer folds in half with alternator attached. Bicycle comes off turbo trainer & can be used as normal by just adding tyre & Innertube.
Bike kept in campervan with turbo trainer & can be used to jump-start van or charge leisure batteries. Beats charging with a slow battery trickle charger. Basically fully off grid backup. Great videos very interesting to watch & learn from.

Great, doing a similar project! One thing, have understood You should not disconnect the alternator when under power, it might die...but maybe the load of the bulb is enough protection?

I see a potential problem here. With the alternator mounted as shown it will spin counterclockwise instead of the clockwise direction it was intended to. The fan is designed to pull cooling air through the alternator from back to front. Spinning it in the opposite direction greatly impairs its operation, which could cause overheating under heavy loads. The alternator should be turned around so it will spin in the proper direction. Otherwise looks like well put together project.

HOw do you keep the battery from being overcharged by the generator? Is there a regulator in the alternator?

It's an interesting tool. I've been playing with the idea of building one myself as an emergence backup way to charge my DIY lead acid power storage setup (Currently consisting of 32x scrounged second hand 12A server UPS batteries in 4 large stackable tool boxes, with multiple fuses, sockets, and switches, a LOT of 10 and 8 gauge wiring, and 3 1500W Sounds "Ghetto" as hell, but a lot of research went into making sure everything was wired to prevent uneven charging/discharging, and if a battery dies, the rest of them couldn't cook it trying to equalise the voltage).

The thing I'm wondering is though, is there anything in the alternator that prevents your battery from being overcharged, or would the car have had something to modulate the field coils and regulate the alternators output ?

Hi! Great video. I'm rebuilding a 3 pin delco for an mgb v8 and need to know if the diode pack is interchangeable with other models. I've seen a few online but finding info here in the UK is hard. Can I swap any delco diode in that fits or are there differences between the diode packs. Please excuse the question, I'm a mechanic and not an auto electrician.

Disconnecting the charge terminal from a charging alternator is a great way to ruin an alternator. You disconnect the field wire!

Didn't I see years ago, where there was a way to wire an alternator to run a circular saw from your car?
And didn't someone make a plug and play wiring harness, complete with an ac plug for that purpose?

The way this is wired it will drain the battery when your switch is "off" No.2 is not the field power terminal, no. 1 is, No2 is just the voltage sensor. No1 excites the field, and when the alt takes over sends 1v+ thu the light so having 12v+ on either side their is no flow, Wired like t
