Extend Your SSD’s Lifespan – SSD Health Tips – DIY in 5 Ep 175

SSDs offer much greater performance and durability than HDDs, but they aren’t invincible. How can you keep track of your SSD’s health to ensure you optimize your SSD lifespan?

Strengths and Weaknesses of SSDs
The NAND cells in your SSD can only be programmed and erased a finite number of times. This number can be affected by several factors. Extremes of temperature are one such factor. Power outages are another: loss of power during a write cycle can be calamitous. Power surges can also be extremely damaging. Surge protectors and uninterruptible power supplies can protect against these power issues, though.

These videos always give my HDD more life.... I went there.

Hi Trisha, I ran across your channel and I am enjoying it. I am a 61 year old disabled person and I love to learn about computers. I thank you for, well, talking like an actual person. You do not either "Dumb it down" to the point that I feel insulted, (Most of the other channels do that very thing, or they do this>) or talk so far over my head I feel useless listening and trying to learn from. Again, thank you and please keep sharing and teaching us.

I’d like Kingston to make their drive maintenance software available for Linux.

I have a computer repair shop the majority SSD drives that we have fail are usually Kingston branded ones

What you'll want to look for is an over-provisioning feature on the SSD. This feature basically allows you to dedicate more flash storage space towards the read/write blocks. This means swapping between more blocks which results in less damage over time on the SSD. The downside is you lose some storage space.

I still have a 2.5 Kingston SSD (120GB) as a boot drive since 2017 and it still has 76% on the wear level indicator today. They definitely do last a long time especially with the higher capacities. Kudos to Kingston's longevity. :D

Excellent presentation Ms. Hershberger. Thank you 🙂

one advantage of spinning hard drives, a lot of the time they will give you warning signs via noise.. I have drives from the 1990s that still work. I am not sure any ssd will last 25 years and they give no warning because they are silent.

Speaking of longevity, my KINGSTON Data Traveler 2.0 with 8GB is still working with most of the 8GB still intact today. The drive is from 2009 I think.
As a system builder, I only recommend KINGSTON for memory and storage. My latest acquisitions are the 64GB RENEGADE RGB DDR5-6000MT memory kits. Those are fantastic and look cool at the same time.

So the moral of the video we still need hdd for data storage

In my experience the realistic failure cause of an SSD is from the controller rather than NAND durability. Kind of like how most LED bulbs fail from their controller before LED itself wears out.

Been tracking my SSDs usage for two years now and it has a predicted 97 years lifetime…

You guys made me purchase two A400 240GB SSDs. I had this DT50 8GB which I used for installing operating systems on. I rewritten it a lot of times and it still feels like its brand new. Its durable too

1. SMART can be analyzed using crystaldiskinfo
2. TRIM is automatically done in Windows and Linux
3. Longevity and reliability is based on the quality of the binned chips. Low quality bins are cheaper but also can die way faster.

Now I know I'm old. I look up Trisha pictures on Google and my first thought was "where does she get those outfits?" Nice presentation that shows some actual knowledge of the subject and not just reading a script. And I have a LOT of Kingston SSDs. Two in my latest build.

Some drives can wear-level cells used for long term storage by first moving that data other cells and returning the original cell to the pool of free cells. Kingston should think about doing that, since it will dramatically increase the endurance of drives that are nearly full.

The best protection for SSD is the RAM - if the SSD has DRAM cache will last much longer than those without for a typical user.

So Kingston, ad RAM to your SSD's.

My SATA SSD did exactly as you described, out of the blue would not boot. Also failed attempts at repair including using Windows DVD. It’s a Kingston Hyper X. Never stored in the oven nor refrigerator. Typical usage in a typical home. Drive wasn’t near full and less than 2 years old.
