When 17-year-old Shan discovered that 744,000 tonnes of food was wasted in Singapore in 2019, he started looking for solutions.

He says that looking into the issue opened his eyes to the "sheer scale of food wastage" in his country, but he learned that tackling waste can help the community as well as saving food.

This video is part of Project 17, a BBC World Service series produced in partnership with the Open University, in which 17-year-olds around the world look at progress on the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

"Responsible consumption and production" is Goal 12 of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, a set of targets announced in 2015 to transform lives around the world by 2030.The UN wants countries to "substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse" by 2030.
