Under $15,000 Concert Grand VS hybrid piano Samick SG 275

Concert grand found at Craig's Pianos & Keyboards Toledo, OH.
With the price of hybrid pianos going through the roof, one has to stop and ask if a purchase of one of these expensive hybrid pianos makes any sense at all. With the price of used acoustic pianos falling to all time lows, why would it make any sense at all to purchase one of the new generation hybrid pianos? We have seen them with price tags that exceed that of wonderful used pianos presently on the market, like this concert grand or the used but unplayed 183 Schiedmayer/Kawai that I purchased for the studio for way under the price of of several hybrid pianos. I have never seen any hybrid that would compete with pianos of this level (not even close). I feel that the under $2,000 market makes sense, but over $2,000 one really has to start considering a used acoustic upright piano for a bit more money, or even a full blown concert grand like this one.

Samick is a Korea-based musical instrument manufacturing company and started out as Samick Pianos in 1958. In 1992 Samick built its P.T. Samick factory in Indonesia where the majority of their instruments are manufactured.

Just wanted to clarify my thoughts on this piano. I feel this model is of very good quality for the asking price of the piano. I am not saying the line of Samick pianos in general is of this quality level, as they are not. I feel Samick really tried hard to make this the best piano they could, but other models did not receive that detail of attention.

I really enjoy your presentations. I wish you would play a series of complete classical pieces. You are already an inspiration for us older folk. I believe that you could introduce the young audience to classical music. Your youth and experience is a great asset to the future generation.

Samick is a Korean piano manufacturer. Not known for quality pianos. But this concert grand sounds pretty good actually.

I bought a Samick baby grand 4'9" polished ebony, in the late 80's, and it had an outstanding sound. Also, a modest price within my budget. According the documentation that came with the piano, it was from South Korea. The tuning was done once every six months, and that was in the Caribbean weather. I like your presentation approach.

I grew up woth a Samick SG-172 in my home (which I sadly didn't take advantage of, my meagre musical talent took me to guitar).

Unfortunately, according to the gentleman who tuned it (and who had recommended it) found out that the major employees had gone on strike at the time when my piano was manufactured. In short, my Samick is sadly approaching the end of its lifespan after less than 30 years of sounding absolutely lovely.

Love to hear it in front of an orchestra. Pirates of Caribbean rocks - bright, nice and loud.

Samick is a large South Korean conglomerate that builds pianos under several different names. They own Knabe and Seiler, and they also build pianos for C. Bechstein. They build other musical instruments beside pianos. Samick started in 1958. I don't think they have gone out of business, but I may be wrong.

I tried a Samick at a piano store a few days ago, and I didn't like it at all. It had a decent sound, but the keys and action felt almost depressing to play. I dont know why though, as I played a few great pianos that do also use a Renner action.

I know one reason why ppl may need a hybrid instead of a concert grand: the housing price in CA is so high that we can afford pianos but not the space...

James,
You nailed the description, softly, so-so ..Loudly very good.
JUst out of curiosity, Is the hammer shift to soften the sound and expensive operation?
Cheers,
Rik

Since I started looking intensively for a new instrument, I am seeing lots of "deals" on used grands in the 6' range. Something like twice the price of a good hybrid (not the top end ones, of course!) can get a nice Kawaii or Yamaha. The Baldwin pianos from 1975- 85 seem to have a pretty good rep. and the demos I've seen interest me, but most of these stores that I've seen posting demos are either in California or Florida. Geographical extremes from my location, so I anticipate shipping costs to be prohibitive. My next plan is to get to Toronto (closest major city) and try to get to two, maybe three places in a day, and try to swing a deal. My mantra? "Piano prices are negotiable, piano prices are negotiable..."
Looks like you had a great time at NAAM, and the look on your face when you were playing that Fazioli... Pure Joy! Keep up the good work, Love the channel!

I have a digital piano myself, but I don't think hybrid pianos should be compared to acoustic grands. The reason digital pianos are made is not to compete with acoustic pianos, but to help the person who can't afford an acoustic piano like myself to still be able to learn and play piano.

If you don’t mind me asking, you seem to travel a lot. Other than for YouTube why do you travel so much? Is it for your recording studio?

I owned a Otto Altenburg Grand, which was one of Samick’s many stencil pianos. It also had a Renner action. It was a horrible piano, but it was one of the lower end models. I do have to give this concert grand credit on sounding pretty darn good. Although, I still don’t think a Samick belongs in a concert hall. To my knowledge, they are still in business in Indonesia. They bought the William Knabe name a while ago, and make pianos under that name.

Do you have any idea what the symbol to the right are? Just below the cheek plate? I just purchased a Samick, it has two of these badges and I can’t find out what they mean. Thanks!!
