Grand piano or Upright piano?

It depends. There are uprights that are sounding way better then some cheap grand pianos.

Been learning to play the piano for nearly a year now. Both sounded beautiful to me, though for me the grand piano had more fullness and richness in it’s sound. In terms of the reality of my life though, a grand piano is not a consideration based on space and cost. Therefore a nice upright would do in my home. Got to know life’s limitations!😊

You didn't explain the difference, so I will.

A grand piano has horizontal strings and a horizontal action with hammers moving upwards. This orientation is superior because gravity helps to put the hammer back in position after striking a key, which means a grand piano can repeat notes quicker. As the name suggests, a grand piano is typically larger, giving them a fuller sound

An upright piano has verticle strings and a verticle action. It is a compromise made for space efficiency, but personally, I usually like the character of an upright piano more. I think a grand piano sounds too perfect if that makes sense, and maybe too classical.

The comparison in this video isn't very fair, though, because the upright piano is closed. You can get much more out of an upright piano by taking the panels off. Also, the character varies wildly. Two upright pianos can also sound completely different from each other, and so can two grand pianos...

Also, besides the sustain pedal, the other pedals typically have different functions on grand piano's vs. upright piano's, but this also varies within the same category.

All with all grand piano's are superior and more professional, but with their own character, which isn't the most suitable for all genres.

Upright piano sounds more like a saloon piano.... but standing free or against a wall also makes a difference.... but hearing compare it to some digital piano's.... the DP's are getting closer and closer

String length, unless one gets a 5ft 7 or larger grand, the string length of one of the tallest uprights would provide almost the same string length, Uprights obviously take up less room, and really need to be against a wall and will utilize the room as a speaker. A big differerence not mentioned much is that the action in a ground is up and down so gravity naturally pulls the notes down and back into place after being played, Uprights the action is sideways so gravity cannot help. Bass notes on a grand seem to usually have more fullness and maturity.

The upright is brighter. The grand has better richness and more complex sound articulated

I like them both to be honest. However the upright you were playing had a long board. Most upright pianos won't sound that good.
