Anyone who discredits combat sports due to competition rules is kidding themselves. The number one important factor is experience. If you're not tested in a real, high stress situation against an unpredictable opponent, you're kidding yourself.

I learned as a kid when I told my Dad some big kid was picking on me. Big mistake. He said come on show me the big kid and I did and he said now go get him and I said he's bigger and he said I don't care how big he is you either whip his ass or I'm going to whip your ass now pick up something and go up side his head. That day I learned there's nothing to be afraid of.

There's only one rule in a fight and that's WIN.

I trained in taekwondo and hapkido for a decade. It is true that when sparring, you have to follow multiple rules. When I started sparring with my husband, he had to teach me how to fight dirty. On many sparring sessions, he would fight dirty and take me down, and I am a very strong woman. He told me that in the real world, an atta**er will not follow the rules, all goes when you are protecting yourself. So I fully agree with what you are saying.

My dad always told me no such thing as a fair fight. Everything and anything goes. Then he told me the smart thing is situational awareness head on a swivel. Blend in don't stand out. If things can't be avoided then well do whatever you have half to do to win. Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6. Not advising just what I was taught worked so far for me.

I studied Krav Maga before it was cool. Back then Krav was all about quick, dirty and effective and was absolutely not something you can use in a competition. For example, part of the technique for getting out of a bear hug involved biting the opponent’s throat or face.

At 46 I'm just learning to tone down my aggression. I'm only being nice because I found out bad people are going off world. I'm a vet. Once you learn aggression its hard to turn off.

I agree, one of the first martial arts I learned was Tae kwan do. I went through the belts up until I got to my black stripe, that was the point at which I realized that it was going to be mostly useless in a street fight. After that was when I started in to other martial arts, judo, wun hop kuen do, kenpo, ninjutsu, kickboxing, eventually mma and jiu-jitsu. I was mainly only looking for something that was useful outside of tournaments.

Because of Jason and the country's mess of issues happening I learned the words "situational awareness" I'm a youthful 65 yr old lady with neuropathy and a cane...I know exactly what I will do if attacked...no processing what I will do...I will immediately save my own life with certain things I've learned from him. If I'm attacked I will move very quickly and they won't expect it if I am threatened...I finally dont feel nervous or helpless and before anything I pray for protection every day from God Almighty...

When I walk my dog in a very rural area, I carry a 1" pvc sch 40 pipe 5' long, with caps on each end cost about $6.00; dogs and people respect that stick. I am 73, I may also carry SR22 and EC9S

Absolutely no military personnel trains in martial arts the way movies showing at Max a special ops like Navy seals SAS etc have at most 60 hours of training.

My dad always taught me to avoid a fight if you can. There is no shame in that, in fact it is the most intelligent and least risky approach. However, he also said that there are some people who do not understand any language except force. In that case, go for it. Don’t hold back.
