The fault of Augustines version of “original sin” is that it is considered a “substance” that is “transmitted”. Sin is a conscience choice and not a substance. Augustines gnostic roots assumed that the physical body was innately evil, therefore he brought this idea into his christianity. If you are sinners by birth and not by choice, then you dont have free will and sin by necessity.
But we do have free will and sin by choice once we hit a “age/state of accountability”(see Deuteronomy 1:39 and James 4:17).

The main problem with original sin is accountability. If we are born sinners, we arent accountable and therefore wont feel contrite which wont lead to repentance. But if we sin by choice, not by necessity, then we know its our fault and can blame ourselves, and not the way we were made. Its a shame so many believe in augustines version of original sin. The orthodox have a more biblical idea called “ancestral sin” because they didnt rely so heavily on Augustine (Augustine spoke latin vs greek so the orthodox and augustine were separated by language).
