oil change every 5000 miles regardless, cambelt every 12 months, air filters 6 months, wife 3-5 years depending on performance...

I know an old lady who bought a 1957 Chevrolet Belair, She changed oil every 1, 000 miles and 60 years later still drives it.

Personal story: My one and only new car purchase in my life was my 2006 Grand Prix GTP. I followed their instructions to the letter and used the Oil Monitoring. Same story for me. Main bearings, cam and crank were all scored to death by 90k km. I had 600 miles left on my warranty and fought them with my lawyer to cover it because they argued the Oil Monitoring is a 'suggestion' and not getting normal interval oil changes voided my warranty. We won after a couple grand in legal fees and they wound up replacing the whole block with a fresh 2008 LS4. I still have her today, and she runs as strong as ever at 350, 000+ kilo's with oil changes every 3000 miles now. (I have since moved to the US).

A friend of mine noted that these dealers started recommending the longer intervals between oil changes after the dealerships started paying for them for the first year or so after purchase. Back when you had to pay for every oil change it was 3000 miles. Now that the dealers pay it's 7000 to 10, 000 miles.

I figured I'd throw in my 2 cents, I have an '86 Toyota Corolla with 545, 000 miles on it and I'm not the original owner (my dad was) still with the original engine and trans. I've had it for about 350, 000 miles. I use conventional oil and change it every 3000 miles since like you mentioned in your video, its good to have a fresh filter. I have never changed the trans fluid, when it need some I add the highest quality synthetic fluid I can get and that seems to do the trick. It runs like a dream, if I live long enough I'm hoping to hit 1, 000, 000 miles with it. If there's any secret is keep an eye on things that might go, like hoses etc and check it often (I do every couple of days)...have a great day!

I do full synthetic every 5k miles and the result is I still have a smooth, strong running dodge truck at 248, 000 miles. I can hardly believe it myself.

As a Mechanic, I 100% agree, you definitely know your stuff. Keep it up 👍
At the end of the day a broken down car/repairs affect you not the dealer, oil is cheap

I change my oil every 8000 miles or 6 months, never had an issue.

The other item that is overlooked is the oil filter, always get the best you can get.

I guess I'm very old school when it come to oil changes. I change mine every 3, 000 miles on every car I own old or new.

I love motorcycles that have a oil sight glass installed. You can see the oil level just before start up every time. But you can also see the color, and transparency of the oil itself without having to check a dipstick. As soon as the first hint of grey creeps in, the oil and filter get replaced. Buying supplies in bulk, and doing it yourself is fun. And you can do several changes cheaper than one dealer service.

i always change my oil when i notice the color getting darker. i mostly do highway driving so moisture buildup is not a worry so the oil last a bit longer. always comes out clean with no metal flakes or anything. also it helps when you change the oil filter and don't cheap out on the filter or oil.

I have seen and repaired many engines serviced at the "factory recommended" intervals that had more sludge and damage than the one you showed. I have driven and sold more than a few vehicles after putting well over 300k miles on them and they were mechanically in much better shape than many vehicles with only 100k on them. My Secret? Regular service and changing ALL the other fluids on a regular schedule also

I've been working on cars since 1976. I've seen many engines fail with under 100K miles on them because the owners stretched out the oil changes to 6, 7, 8, 000 miles or more. I don't think I've ever seen an engine fail when the person changed their oil every 3, 000 miles. I have quite a few customers with 250K+ miles on them. It's only $25 or so to change the oil, so why take the risk? Of course, that's regular oil. As far as synthetics go, I would change them every 5-6K miles, but not much longer. I've had too many customers ruin their engines when they tried to go 10K miles on synthetics.Just my experience

I go anywhere from 5000 - 7000km before doing an oil change and filter swap. My Honda has a drain plug for Trans fluid so I change that once every 1.5 years...as you say, fluid is cheaper than rebuilding. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Whenever I am using conventional oil I change at 3, 000 miles or every 3 months, if using high mileage synthetic oil. I change it 4, 000 or every 4 months. My car right now has 307, 000 miles keeping with the maintenance is the key to longevity.

Bang on mate. I have applied that same principle and maintenance strategy to my new 14 yr old Terracan and no engine issues todate. Engine still silky smooth.

My '06 Avalanche has one of those oil monitors. When I change the oil and zero it I also zero one of the trip odometers and watch. Light driving in summer watching the percentage drop it's going to be around 7, 500 miles before it gets to zero. In winter the zero will occur earlier. Those are high figures in my mind, I change it when it gets down around 25% oil life. I think, especially with todays oils, 3, 000 miles is overkill. My oil changes occur around the 5, 000 mile mark, I use synthetic and it always comes out pretty clean. On all my other vehicles I just use the 5, 000 mile points on the odometer, (25K, 30K, 35K, etc.) it's always easy to figure out when it's due and I get a zillion miles out of everything I own.

Good video. I always changed mine before 3, 000 miles. The dealer want you to push it longer because then you have to buy a new car way sooner. All they care is it lasts past the warrenty. If it breaks right after that's actually good news for them and they love it. Liked and subscribed.

That's what I've been trying to tell all my family members that bought new cars. The new oil change intervals recommended by the dealerships should be completely ignored because the dealerships don't want your vehicles to last, they need to you buy a new one every 5 years.
The VW dealership I bought my new GTI at told me oil change intervals are 10k kilometres, I change it at 6k because I don't trust them.
