I have a dedicated imaging VM with no disks attached except a bootable DVD iso with Linux based imaging software on it. In this case I'd attach the HDD of the VM I want to backup to the imaging VM and then boot it from the DVD iso. I can then image the VM HDD to either a network share or attached USB drive.

You really over complicated the process. Very out of date. All you had to do is hit F8 to get a command prompt.
