Sometimes i look at programming videos and think to my self, what goes on the heads of people who are not in IT when they see those videos

Having recently got into vim, I have to admit that a good macro hits like crack

The thing I like about vim motions is it’s like a mini game while you code. You have to press the right key combinations just like a video game. I find gamifying my workflow really works for me.

classic programmer moment of writing a macro to complete a task you could have done manually in 1/10 the time but it being SO WORTH IT ANYWAY

@@ or Q to play the last recorded macro, for anyone interested.

When you get to this level you will understand the enjoyment

But the real fun is hitting @<whatever>, to test it, then seeIng you have 4 more lines, 2 examples each, and just hitting 8@@, and watching it do all of them in one shot.

I mean... I can just hold ALT, select the lines and press "." 😂

Block/multi cursor solves this problem quite fast.

After using vim for over half a year (forcing myself through the default motions):
What I like about it: configurability, things like this
What I dislike about it: vim-motions, the fact that it's a modal editor

This looks like a multi carret dream (I'm definitely misspelling that, sry xD)

I’d do the same faster with multi cursors, select m, ctrl D till I find all m, move all cursors right by 2, put a dot, then select the letters, use “to lowercase” macro.

ctrl+v 5j shift+i "." esc l ctrl+v 5j u. Repeat on next column. 0 macros

It's moments like these that make me glad I know vim motions.

instead of @a u can just do Q to replay the last saved macro

I know he’s using vim but can’t you use some shit like ctrl D after highlighting a text to find the matching text and add a cursor there so you can edit multiple lines at once.

This is something u can do pretty easily with multiple cursors in vs code too
