Don't loan money to your friends and family.

A rule of I've always lived to is "Don't lend money you can't afford to lose".
A family member wants to borrow £200, no problem.
A friend wants to borrow a few thousand? Forget it, even if I've got full faith they'll pay it back. Never break your own rules.

That is a good lesson. I had a prof in grad school who'd never speak to his brother b/c the brother owed him so much money and wouldn't pay. Friends, family and money never mix.

Don't give money period. People need to start being responsible. You giving to them will most likely enabling them to keep messing up. Unless you monitor them then yes

This happen to me. Some of my friends, family and relatives are like this. Took advantage of your kindness and even make you the bad one if you don’t give them money.

I have to agree, lending money to friends can hurt the friendship and turn them into scroungers. Lending money I consider it as a present where I'm not expecting them to pay me back.

I had this happen to me with a person I really looked up to. I felt used in some way. Until now I havent told him to give my money back because he is a really special person to me, but I feel somewhat resentful and I will never forget it. If they thought of returning the money, they would be asking for the loan to the bank, not you. They only want you for the money. Even if you forgive, the relationship is never the same.

Yup, I have given money to some single mom friends of mine, they never asked I just gave it to help them out.

I have the lowest income of my siblings and somehow they always have money problems that I need to help them out with while going out to fancy dinners and being on jet ski's on vacation. 🤨

The stupidest thing is to think you're actually investing in the bond with you and your sibling when he guilts you to lend money any way. Only fools give in to this. In the long run he'll abandon you, because he doesn't wanna pay you back. I'd rather have my money still with me while my brother turns against me, then being broke while he abandons me any way.

and damn was he right. let me tell you, i had 3 good friends. when i inherited my dad and was wealthy for that one time in my life, i ditched those 3 friends right away. especially after the first one started with the old "lets go for some dinner and you pay" game.
