I actually accounted for this when I wrote a Donkey Kong Country movie script. Lanky starts off as the runt of the Orang-Utan Gang. He gets picked on and bullied by the other Manky Kongs because he's too nice, he would rather join with the DK Crew but can't because he thinks he's a reject.

Of course DK and Diddy help him out and from there on out, he leaves the Orang-Utan Gang for the Kong Family.
