The first start of the engine will have to wait a little longer as unexpectedly we need to rebuild the transmission and overdrive first. In this video we are tearing apart and inspecting the D-type overdrive.

Watching you strip down the D-Type OD and seeing the really ingenious way it works makes me think of the guy's that designed these units. Great video Elin and look forward to the re-assembly.

I have always wished that my GT6 had an overdrive but now not so much even though you make servicing look easy. Great job, Elin. Looking forward to rebuild.

I have never owned a car with OD and have always wondered why anyone would go to that effort instead of just adding another gear to the box. My mental capacities, however, are limited, so I will just watch and enjoy your mastery of these amazing machines. Thanks, Elin!

Well that was the best possible outcome really! No lost bits of metal inside, and all those seals really needed changing. For the lock nuts / tab washers, Overdrive Repair Services in Sheffield, England could be an option if you need them in future. They’re small enough parts that shipping might not be too terrible cost wise. If anyone can get the right parts it’d be them, the company is mainly staffed with ex Laycock employees so they know their stuff!

Apart from the smaller size, the D-types do like to leak oil

The first 2 digits of the serial number is the gear ratio in percent. In this case 25% reduction.

21:07 … did I hear one of the missing gearbox balls fall out when you turned it upside down?

Hello Elin,
Another very well recorded & informative video . One thing I always wonder . You spin the bearings & say they are good . Since you have the whole assembly taken apart, would it not be a good idea to spend the extra & replace the bearings ?

Another comment, you show a plunger the same as used on the operating valve spring/ball bearing also used against the ball bearing of the oil pump. My Volvo 1800's D Type had this but nowhere in any literature (including the Vitesse/GT6 manual I just downloaded) does it show such a part, there was an update that used a straight pin to keep the spring oriented against the bearing but it does not contact the ball and I don't see it in the GT6 shop manual. I have asked this question on multiple sites but no one has encountered such a duplicate plunger, most say it would be unnecessary. I am wondering if it was an unauthorised shop fix to increase the pressure on the pump.

You really need a designated tear down table and keep all the other crap off of it.make much easier for dismantling and reassembling, make nice cleaner build back.just saying, you make it to hard on yourself sometimes, just saying.no need.good video.just take a deep breath and don’t get into such a hurry, waited this long.😎😎😎👍👍👍

The serial number tells you that it is a 25% overdrive, J-types are 28% usually

Elin, I’m disappointed.

I sent you the 1/4” lock tab washers at a time you were going to rebuild a D Type and I think it was beyond repair so you abandoned it.

Anyway as sad as I am, if you want to use the correct lock washers, Aircraft Spruce in Brantford carries them, they are used commonly on Cessna aircraft and are rated airworthy while not all nyloc type nuts are so if you don’t want bits of steel floating around in your OD when out on the highway I’d say they are a good idea.

Certainly better than whatever Boeing is using to hold its door panels in place.

Do you repair the crazy old overdrive for historic car purism? Surely there is now a 5 or 6 speed gearbox that could be adapted to fit? It amazes me that a four speed box is such an easy well understood item and yet they added an overdrive that is almost more complex than the entire rest of the car. I suppose that a mass produced overdrive is not too complex because it only had to be designed once. The nightmare comes for anybody who wants to repair it. Not only that but they made so many variants. There may have been gearbox design engineers who made their entire careers out of designing all this silly nonsense. Why did they not just develop a six speed box to start with?

Wtf were they thinking? All that complicated technology just to get a 5
