The Tsukiji neighborhood in Tokyo is well know for its fish market - which has now moved to Toyosu a few km away, but it was also the first foreign residential area and the birth place of many Japanese universities, the first US Embassy and many western hospitals in the Edo period (19th century).
After the great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, Tsukiji became a promient neighborhood and this area had a lot of copper alloy plated houses, businesses and warehouses. Many were destroyed in WWII and in area renovations, new apartment buildings, but there are several still around in this neighborhood behind Hongwan-ji Temple, made of stone after the earthquake to make sure it doesn't get destroyed.

Tour with me in a Street View episode through the streets of old Tsukiji.

Japan shows us that it is possible to have tight communal living without letting our surroundings get cluttered up with so much trash; there's so much we can learn from this attitude of caring that the Japanese seem to exude almost naturally.

Such character in this old buildings, and since they're houses and stores there's so much variety in each block. Those big new buildings never seem to be as interesting to look at.

The retro vending machines for things like beer and batteries is so cool to see. Such ingenuity in those engineers to make those machines.

When I was a teen, I enjoyed riding my bicycle and visiting neighborhoods in Tokyo with remaining old constructions. So sad when old constructions are torn down. A part of history vanishes :(

Copper patina, that turning green, is protective. It just is a surface layer and then it stops. So you always let copper do that. It is why the Statue of Liberty is green, yes, it's outer layer is copper, that's not paint, that is copper patina. Eiffel was a smart man. And the Japanese were smart, too. Protective and pretty, and doesn't need painting.
Those were very interesting buildings. Glad we could visit them.

Great stream. More like these please. I find these 'common' buildings more interesting and how they've evolved over time. Will the new builds last as long? 👍🏽

This is genuinely amazing, I can hardly believe there are any buildings left from before the war! Combined with the Great Kanto Earthquake there's just so little left of prewar Tokyo.

I’m surprised to see these houses in Tsukiji. I’d normally need to travel to Kyoto just to see houses like these. It really amazes me how Japan is able to preserve history while being one of the most modern countries in the world. One of the reasons why I love love taking random walks around Japan’s various neighbourhoods is everything is pleasant, from the surroundings to the people! Keep up with the great content!! Will probably do this neighborhood walk when I return to Japan once it opens again.

So sad to see those beautiful old buildings go, feel like Tokyo will lose some of it's charm without them
