Lawn aeration is great when it comes to decompacting soil. The problem with lawn aeration is the machine is very invasive in the soil and makes a massive mess.

The better solution is to use a lawn scarifier. Scarifiers dig into and take out 1/4th inch of the thatch layer. much like a tiller without the wings a lawn scarifier digs out the actual thatch layer without leaving you with a ton of useless plugs all over the place. The thatch layer is the upper root mass of the grass that is slightly above and slightly below the soil surface. When the thatch layer gets to thick it doesn't allow water and minerals to pass through properly. which is why thinning the thatch layer out is an important part of the lawn care process.

Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. First saw the Sunjoe two years ago on your channel, just used it for third year two weeks ago and fertilized. Got a lot of rain after and it's starting to look fairway quality. A couple neighbors asked me how I do it. Told the to watch your channel 😊😊

I dethatched my backyard twice with the greenworks dethatcher for an upcoming overseed with Lawnlife's TTTF/KBG (hopefully today/tomorrow) but now I may just go ahead and use the tractor tow-behind for a scarify as well to get a full and proper prep. Always had good luck with that tool before any type of seed application. Just need the weather to agree with me!

Finally took your advice and went to get my own dethacher but sunjoe and others were sold out. I decided to buy a cheapo from amazon. Like so many amazon thinfs these days, it appears they're all coming out of the same factory now so i figured brand doesn't much matter.

Just finished last night and ready for seeding. I only used the scarifier cuz my soil is uneven and awful, removing rocks and such that came with my last topsoil load. Once i fix that and it's as smooth as your front lawn I'll use the dethatcher attachment.

Between this, tenacity, and barenburg seeds I'd better have a good lawn this year.

Professionly, I've been performing both aeration and detaching services for over 35 years and actually doing aeration in the fall is absolutely the best thing you can do for your lawn. Part of aeration benefits is to help break down excess thatch, but the main benefit is to strengthen the root system of the existing grass by reducing compaction and allowing the root system to grow into the holes from the plug removal. This is also the best preparation for overseeding, creating the best seed to soil contact, which is essential for successful germination. Some thatch layer is ok, but if it gets excessive from not aerating, only dethatch in the spring after the 3rd mowing or so.

Thanks for all your information!! This past summer and fall I put a ton of effort into the lawn, including prepping for the winter. In March I could see the lawn growing in greener, thicker and less weeds. I do love my SunJoe 😊 just would be nice to have a bigger collection bag 😮. Thanks again

I use that machine along with liquid aerate and it has certainly helped. Here in CO the ground gets hard as a rock and this helps keep it softer.

When aerating, spread compost over the lawn to fill holes and some lays on top. Overseed using Tenacity to prevent foreign growth. Both aerating and loosening the soil at the same time. Allowing existing grass roots to spread and grow, compost eating up the clay, and filling with seed.

Aeration is very good to your lawn especially when you use compost instead of sand after that.

I am not aerating my lawn ever again. I used to aerate every two years and it seems like it propagated unwanted grasses. I killed off the unwanted grasses and used a Greenworks dethatcher and reseeded with Rhizotomous TTTF. If needed, I will dethatcher with the Greenworks dethatcher and might try liquid aeration from YardMastery. Thx for the video.

Does this also work well for tall fescue in regard to thinning out the lawn but growing new shoots. My seed was from Twincityseed - Resiliance Orginal. Also dealing with the begginings of fungus. Wanted to put down bio stims with mycorrhizal fungi

Hi Ginja, sorry to bother you. I absolutely love your channel. I just wish that you were also in the south. I live in McKinney TX. I was all hiped and ready to go ripping with my dethatch and scarifier until you mentioned that this is not great for Bermuda. I also loved all your episodes on weed control and looked towards tanacity, but again hesitant towards Bermuda. Do you have recommendations or a place that I can be pointed to, to best help me in my area? Thank you so much for all that you do!
