We built our chicken coop out of recycled pallets in 2020. We absolutely love the design. When you're designing your own coop, don't forget to think about how you will clean it.

ABOUT US: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. We have a garden, backyard chickens, and build or fix anything that we need to. We still work corporate day jobs, but are working to eventually leave the 9-5 lifestyle in favor of a self-built, debt-free, homestead on 6 acres nearby.

We upload a YouTube video every week and post daily on Instagram.

COME SAY HI 🙂

Having built a significant coop, I can say the no1 requirement is the cleaning aspect.
A mite infestation was the learning process. I had made the coop too complex inside.
I remade the interior. 100% lined. Simplified everything, and made everything removable.
The waist height idea is excellent.

I designed and built my 8’x20’ chicken coop/tractor. I can feed, water and collect eggs without ever going into the coop or run and never need to clean it. I just hook up to my pickup and move it 20’ each time to a clean spot fertilizing the lawn as it goes. Remodel your chicken coop to eliminate the mess and maintenance…you’ll love yourself for it.

Cog Hill has theirs in a trailer on wheels. They can move it around the property so they don't lose grass and it controls the bugs and ticks. The fencing is movable. They get locked into the trailer at night.

Excellent coop. Ease of daily chores is a must, but unfortunately most coop designs don’t factor this in. Predator protection is #1, because it only takes ONE VISIT from a tiny weasel to wipe out the entire flock. Comfort for the birds, ventilation, etc., are more important than curb appeal.

Put flashing around the whole bottom of the coop, so opposums don't reach through and grab the chickens.... hello from Florida yall ❤

And don't clean out the coop wearing knitted gloves. They'll likely still get contaminated spreading the new bedding out so you'll be tediously picking out contaminated wood shavings out of the knitting before throwing them in the laundry. Get regular yellow latex gloves from the grocery store. They are thick & reusable ( not like nitrile or vinyl food service gloves) you can wash them under hot soapy water while you still have them on and then slip them off and hang them up to dry.

I'm out here with a hoop coop i built for less than $400 that i haven't needed to clean out since i built it last year. This is why I prefer deep bedding 😂

What is the white stuff she spreads out?

The base should have been a conveyor belt. So at the press of a button, it will drop off all the used material into a wheel barrow.

If I'm able to move where I can get some land, my only wishes is a few goats and chickens. This is a great idea 🙏❤️
