Why raise chickens in tunnels?
Have you ever seen chickens walking on overpasses? It would look like tigers in a zoo! Instead of letting them roam freely on lush green grass, people have designed galvanized iron mesh tunnels for them to move around.
The innovation you're seeing is called a "chicken tunnel," with one end directly connected to the chicken coop. This design not only prevents the chickens from wandering around and damaging crops but also protects them from predators. To save space, some farms have even elevated these chicken tunnels.

As a chicken farmer, I'm glad my chickens have no natural predators here in NZ. No snakes, eagles, foxes. They just roam free. I raise them for eggs. I also raise milk goats and mini cows for milk and cheese. I sell eggs, milk, cheese and butter for a living and buy meat, water filter and small wind generator for electricity. And seeds, don't forget seeds so you can plant veggies during summer.

My neighbours chickens roam free and now make their way to my property every morning. They’re so social and she brings me free eggs 😂

None of the tunnels had to do with a farm. Those are all pet birds. Farmers don't use those things for a reason. Or several reasons, actually. Those tunnels are actually pretty flimsy. Also, they're relatively expensive. It's much more cost effective to use a chicken tractor or simply enclose a large area than to build those tunnels around your property. Finally, there's no good access into the tunnels by people. What do you do when there's an issue with a bird in one? Or when a hen decides to lay an egg in one. Cute toys for hobbyists, but not useful for actual farming.

I've raised chickens for 40 years and I can tell you that metal ball would not work. Chickens scratch with their feet and flip over large sticks and such to get the bugs which hide under them. They would be incredibly bad at what they do like that.

As a chicken owner and caretaker, I laughed cynically when it was said they'd look like tigers at the zoo. 🤣

I've never heard anyone say they wanted "chewier" meat. But, it's a great idea to avoid death from the sky.

That ball just gives the hawks an easier grip!

Those raised tunnels and metal cages are a great way to start introducing bumble foot into your flock. Nice idea though. The ground tunnels are perfect for small backyard and small scale homesteads. Running it from one side of your coop around the parameters of your garden to the other side of the coop can create an effective insect barrier. I would line that tunnel with something like dried leaves or woodchips. I like the dried leaves idea best. Lets the birds compost them with their scratching, droppings ect. and makes for an easier annual clean up of the tunnel straight into the compost pile to mature.

I've read somewhere that meshes are bad for their tallons/feet because it can cause cuts. So not sure if the elevated walkways are actually good for them.

NGL, those chickens running through the tunnels like a mad car race had me chuckling hard!!! LOL

I think those tunnels kept them from drowning in a metal ball in the pool too 😅

I was going to laugh at “million dollar chicken farmer” but then I remembered the price of eggs.

I like those round, wire balls for the chickens. They can move around freely, safely. But my grandparents had free-roaming chickens that did so pretty safely; at least in the day. At night, they had to be locked in the henhouse, as predators tried to get to them.

A pub I used to go to twenty years ago, had all these mesh tunnels around the walls in an outdoor area where people ate and drank etc. The children of the customers were entertained watching rabbits, gerbils etc running around ( depending on the size of the mesh ), from their heated hutches and boxes all day long, I thought then what a good idea 👏🏻. The pub is in Hull, UK .
