In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Tibetan Mastiff that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Working Dogs
Weight: 75 to 160 pounds
Height: 2 feet to 2 feet, 2 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 10 - 14 years

With his noble appearance, long coat, appealing colors, and beautiful tail, the Tibetan Mastiff is sure to be a conversation starter and traffic stopper as you walk him down the street. But if that's all you're looking for in a dog, this is not the breed for you. Before considering the drawbacks, here's what we love about this breed. The Tibetan Mastiff is loving, gentle, patient, and understanding. His centuries of working closely with humans have made him very sophisticated in the ways he understands people.

A Tibetan Mastiff is a hard worker, protective of his family, fearless, and loyal. His large size and substance make him a wonderful guard dog, and centuries of breeding for that specific task has perfected him as a protector. As attractive as that sounds, it's essential to weigh carefully the other qualities that can make him a challenging proposition. This is an independent guardian breed who will not always look to you for guidance. He will enjoy your company and bond with you, but he won't always obey you, especially in a situation in which he believes he's right. The Tibetan Mastiff is stubborn and usually doesn't do well in obedience or agility competitions.

Tibetan Mastiffs are generally quiet dogs when their needs and living conditions are met, but if left outdoors at night they can be barkers. Of course, there's an easy solution: bring your dog inside. If you use a yard, make sure it's well-fenced; Tibetan Mastiffs have been known to climb fences to escape. And be sure not to leave these dogs outside for very long because they may start to dig and become territorial and aggressive.

My grandfather found 1 in a dumpster as a puppy back in the late 70's (In Waterbury CT, USA), & brought it home! We never knew what type of dog he was, we thought maybe a Rottweiler/New Foundland Mix?? I just recently seen this breed thru another YT video! Let me say, our dog's name was Paco & he was the smartest, most loyal breed I've ever known/seen! When I'd go home from my grandparents house 2 cities away/approx 30-35 min drive, Paco would run 2 my house 2 be w/me! He'd go back & 4th whenever he felt like it! He'd walk me 2 my friends house & pick me back up b4 dark when I was little! He'd show up @ my grandmother's job as well within the same city, but an approx 20-25 min drive! Independent is an understatement! He knew his way around, take off whenever he felt like it & come back before my grandmother got out of work, or 2 be home when every1 was home! He'd open the garage doors & door knobs whenever he wanted 2 go out & press the garage door button 2 close it & get out in time! Every1 who ever seen him got scared & thought he was a bear! Lol!😆
Paco literally put Lassie 2 shame! He sadly passed away after living 28 human yrs/196 dog yrs! Amazing, amazing dog! He was gentle & never aggressive unless trouble showed up! The absolute most loveable, loyal, intelligent dog I've ever had the pleasure 2 have!💯😍🥰❤❤❤

I would love to own one of these dogs one day! Not only because of their massive size and fluffy coat, but also because I would love to have one trained to be a service dog to help with my mental disabilities.

I stayed with my brother one night and he had the female TM in to feed and she sleeps at night unlike the other four that sleep during the day. He put her food down and she wouldn't touch it. My brother was confused as she usually eats well. I worked out the problem. Because my brother and I get along well she realised I had a high place in his pack, even though she had only met me once before, so I went up and patted her and pointed to the food. She immediately started eating it. The certainly are a pack animal and I would not want to be around if someone attacked my brother with any of the five TMs around.
