I've started with T'au and haven't had too hard a time with it yet. We got good Combat Patrols and a decent secondhand market for crisis suits if you're willing to repose and magnetize. And you don't have to worry as much about your Fight phase so it's one less thing to think about.

If you to collect Ultramarines, there’s loads on eBay, well painted for usually the same price as buying unpainted. If you want PLAY, this will save you a lot of time. Also the average player doesn’t have a fantastically painted army. So don’t worry about yours.

I got me a blade guard captain and lieutenant for 30 quid painted to a very good standard. I couldn’t paint then.

Unfortunately that captain was used as basing material for my Magnus The Red (the shield fits perfectly in his open hand)

"Tyranids are cheap and easy to paint"

Me trying to get 60 hormagaunts with feathered carapaces: "hmm"

Votann best starting army. Very easy to learn and you're not overwhelmed by choices, you get to grow with the faction as well.

Most importantly with Orks you always win. If you take objectives and gain VP, you win. If you don’t take objectives and instead decide to charge at your enemy head on…you still win. I haven’t won a game in 2 years, but you bet anything that I had fun doing it.

I'd be hesitant to start Grey Knights. I'd guess their firstborn units will be replaced with new units with their codex in 2025. Just a guess though.

The main problem I have with Grey Knights is how small they are...

Just bought the new Blood Angels box set, the spearhead strike force box, a Chaplain on a bike (favorite model), another Chaplain,
and Mephiston.
Gonna pick up the new combat patrol box, a gladiator lancer, and an impulsor this Christmas. All under a grand.

Meanwhile there's me, starting off with an Imperial Guard army because why should anything I do be easy? 😂

I've gotten into 40k recently and now with the hype of space marine 2 a few of my friends are following suit.
They don't want to spend the money for a combat patrol. So my advice has been: pick a faction you like; buy a cheap box that looks good; get the fewest paints and brushes you need; don't get any more mini's until you finish the one's in that box.
They seem to prefer that over planning an army or buying a combat patrol.

Idk if starting grey knights who are almost certainly going to get updated as some point is the best advice to new player. Its going to lead to a ton of feelsbads when their models get rotated and their stuck rebasing or shelving their army.

I think custodes is the best starter army to learn the game with ..and not invest heavily money wise initially ... incase the game itself is not really for you and you not wasted hours and hours or stacks of cash on a more complex army ..

Problem with knights is simply that in some local gaming, they can be abit oppressive into fellow news players / or starter armies ... so I am not sure knights are really a good choice for a first army but certainly a 2nd/3rd army imo ..

With Guaranteed yearly price hikes. I'd almost say none of them soon enough.

I still think Khorne daemons fit the criteria pretty well
