This roofing inspection is located in Wichita, Kansas.

He speaks about the code issues that require Homeowner's insurance policies to purchase a full roof replacement.

Many old houses, and even some newer have used slat decking instead of code-required solid sheathing.

When the homeowner's policy includes code coverage and a non-code-compliant issue such as insufficient roof sheathing, then the insurance company must replace the entire roof per code requirements in many locations.

Don't make your company liable for an impossible quality repair. Don't put your business at risk for violating code.

Learn the insurance policies, details, and providers that you are working with as a roofer. If you do, you will keep yourself out of trouble, receive lucrative approvals, and provide the best service possible for your customers.

Early this year last 20-30 shingles off main house combined with detached garage. They give us $1000 just repair. We lived in the house 10 years . Shingles are starting to show fiberglass from last few years storms hit northern CA.

Choosing to bend shingles in the shade of a cool morning is not too bright. Try the same test at 75 degrees in direct sunlight.
And people wonder why insurance rates are going sky high!

My roof has wood shake shingles used as decking, the adjuater from state farm came out and said, "looks like normal wear and tear to me." They denied my claim for hail and wind damage

That's not how the irc works. For correct information, look up the 2012 irc and read about decking.

After having my roof inspected by 3 independent roofing companies, all agreeing hail damage and reviewing the weather record (6 coverable hail events in roof history, active leaks) the inspector from SF came out, only looked at the roof for 2 min and walked up to my wife and started accusing her of fraud. After a long battle and several heated calls to those assholes we got the roof replaced. I am switching companies today after they were unable to even get my paperwork correct. Just say NO to State Farm Insurance.

I had shingles blown off about a 6 x 4' area and many more creased. I have State Farm. My roof has 2 layers of shingles and code says 2 layers can't be repaired - a code issue. To make matters worse, the roof is about 18 years old and has Tempco American sized shingles. The only color that SF says is a close match (I haven't see it) is Metric sized. State Farm will only pay $6000 to do one slope (on front of $500k house) and entire replacement is $20K. I don't trust most public adjusters, so what would you advise? Should I file my own Proof of Loss and sue them or what?

Those of you who are finding it impossible to get decent homeowners insurance coverage need to realize why. This is a classic example. This was an OLD roof that needed to be replaced BEFORE any storm came along. This contractor is proud of the fact that he got the insurer to do a complete roof replacement on a roof that the homeowner was responsible for. YOU paid for that new roof. The insurance company didn't end up paying for it... YOU did.

You’re being misleading. I’m a licensed claims adjuster and a real estate investor.

State Farm always pays for what is owed based on the policy. Nothing less, but in some cases they will do more. Not betterment, but more. Roofs can be repaired if you know what you’re doing and there’s still life in the shingles. Roofers repair roofs all the time. The fact is that they don’t like to go behind someone else’s work.

Code compliance and build ordinances is part of most policies because it is mandated by most states legal codes and statutes. So finding a code violation for a roof replacement is nothing amazing, it’s just doing your job. State Farm, like most insurance companies, have a threshold of when a full roof replacement is required over repair and that threshold is low. So if a homeowner doesn’t get a full roof replacement on a claim it’s because the damage from the cause of loss was minimal at best.

You did not win anything. You used code to do what is expected when discovering a covered loss. Stop being that guy and be the person that is humble about the process. You give contractors a bad name.
