This is based on a true event it happened in Alaska On July 9, 1958, Howard Ulrich and his seven-year-old son were in the little boat when this massive wave came towards them and to survive the guy had to ride over the wave.

*For the curious:*
The run-up height was 524m, not the wave height.

True story. A father told his son to put on his life vest and pray as he turned the boat into the wave. What a fishing trip! Had he tried to out run it they would of been killed.

The reason the captain headed straight at the tsunami is that you must never let a tsunami know you are afraid. Tsunamis can sense your fear and, if they do, they will attack you without mercy. But stand up to a tsunami and it will pass you by as this one did. The same applies to avalanches FYI.

Можно только представить какой ужас пережили рыбак со своим восьмилетнем сыном оказавшись в бухте Литуйя. На канале Discovery в фильме про цунами, были показаны эти выжившие люди.

And going up over it was the best option? I never would have thought of heading straight for it.

My understanding is that the wave that travelled through the bay was about 20m high ... as opposed to the wave that hit the mountain directly opposite the landslide, which washed up said mountain for hundreds of metres

Smart captain, that wave is only gonna get bigger.
