There is a movie called 'The Impossible' based on a true story of a family that survived this tsunami. It's a must watch. One of the best movies I've seen.

Indonesian here. When I was a child, I still remember this devastating tsunami. It was in the news for about 3 months

My Papa is a survivor. He told me stories that give me goosebumps. He survived because he ran far away from the ocean when he saw the wave coming and when the water hit him, he was able to hold on to a door. He lost all his friends who were with him that day, along with thousands of others.
The worst part was, so he told me, that he tried to save a little boy but he couldn’t.
He was on vacation in Khao Lak, Thailand

The final death toll was at least 225, 000, mostly in Indonesia, Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka. The affected countries also reported extensive economic and infrastructural damage.

It's not the size of the wave that matters. It's the power underneath the ocean that you really gotta worry about

Wife is from Thailand and was in the south at the time. She says the worst part was after when the bodies were everywhere and you couldn’t stop hearing survivors moaning and crying 😔 Thank you to any rescue workers and volunteers out there (during any event) who sacrifice so much for us

There’s a Japanese politician who insisted they should build a huge wall around their coast. It cost a lot of money and he was old and deeply unpopular for this obsession but it did get built. It was the only village that survived the tsunami in 03

Idk why, but these tsunami videos evoke such strong feelings of terror, heartache, questions, and utter shock in me. 😢 It's just such a massive and yet unimaginable event to witness secondhand. I can't imagine seeing it firsthand. 😢

The region you mentioned where 167000 died is Aceh, Indonesia. Prior to 2004, most people had very little knowledge about tsunamis and there were no major warning systems. Right now, it's good to see they are more cautious about tsunamis. It's approaching it's 20th anniversary and should always serve as a reminder of the threats of such disasters. My condolences to all those people who lost their close ones and rest in 🕊️

*On 26 December 2004, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2–9.3 Mw struck with an epicentre off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia which was responsible for the tsunami. Dead toll was highest in Indonesia with 167, 000+ alone in the Aceh Region. Death toll is estimated around 230, 000 with millions displaced losing their properties. 14 other countries including India, Sri Lanka, Thailand were also affected by it where thousands lost their lives. The waves were as high as 30 m in some parts of Indonesia like the Aceh Region. It's famously known as "The Boxing Day Tsunami" as it occured a day after Christmas.

I'm a Sri Lankan there's a book written by a women based on her actual experience in the tsunami where she lost her whole family called "Wave". It's one of the most beautiful books I've read and would highly recommend to anyone who wants to know more about how the tsunami affected people.

My best friend back then was in Thailand with his family during the tsunami. They survived but some of them were critically injured and almost didn't make it (iirc). They did eventually all recover. I will never forget that. And now the father of that family is a Nobel laureate, Benjamin List

For those unaware, there was a number of people who were saved due to a young girl on vacation who had just learned in class that the receding water was a sign of a tsunami. She had to convince people because there was not much knowledge in that region due to the Indian Ocean not having a tsunami like that, and they unfortunately were unprepared because of this. That tsunami shook the earth and reached too many shores BECAUSE the region had no tsunamis, the pressure built to a point of pure devastation. Always pay attention to the water.

My uncle died in this tsunami.

We found his body still clutching the handle of his briefcase many days later and many miles away. We found the briefcase in his office that got uprooted and carried away.
