By the way, maybe in case somebody still doesn't know this, a tsunami isn't just a big wave, the difference is that a big wave will break once it reaches shore, but a tsunami is a big mass of water all piled up from miles away that sometimes you can't even see cuz it's underwater but it's moving real fast and once it reaches shore even if it doesn't look too tall (like the scary version in movies) it won't break but it'll continue pushing on land and it'll keep going, that's because it is an abnormal wave, it doesn't create because of strong wind but something abnormal has happened like the famous earthquake followed by tidal wave, that's why it's way scarier than just a big wave, if you notice, surfers often surf huge waves all the time, in portugal there's waves coming to shore sometimes as tall as buildings and look way bigger than a tsunami approaching land, but they're normal waves so no matter how big they look, their journey will stop as soon as they hit the land, I remember first watching actual videos of tsunamis recorded after all the movies I've seen, and I was so disappointed to see they don't look big and scary like in the movies, I almost wasn't even scared of them anymore, that until I realized that the power of tsunamis is all beneath that little curve you see approaching the shore and it's not a wave, it's the entire sea coming to your direction

Remember the signs everyone.

1.) Severe ground shaking, typically that of an Earthquake near a costal city.

2.) The beach suddenly receding and revealing the sea floor, as well as bits of wildlife.

3.) A massive “wall” in the distance

If you see or feel any of these signs, that’s your cue to leave the area and go somewhere higher.

Tsunamis dont come in waves, that is why they are so deadly. They move the entire OCEAN so quite simply, all the water you can see in view is moving towards land at high speed

I still find it terrifying how there was 1700 foot waves in a tsunami in Alaska, in 1958.

It’s actually quite easy for a boat to just pop over the wave. A wave that is actaully scary to ships is a rogue wave. They happen randomly and can’t be predicted. They also happen in the middle of the ocean and never reach land, but can still be up to 50 feet tall.

Fukashima daichi owners TEPCO were actually warned in 2006 that a wave this big (50m) could actually happen and hit the power plant so they should build higher and stronger protection but they just ignored it and 5 years later guess what happened?

Explaining this with physics, a Tsunami wave is a Transverse progressive wave and the total energy such a wave(or any other wave) carries is a constant, due to the law of conservation of energy. Said energy in this case depends on the waves amplitude and speed. And since close to shore, the wave is slow its amplitude increases drastically creating the 30 foot high waves you witness wreak havoc on land.
