If you want to install Linux Mint without a bootloader, you will face a problem that there is not option not to install the Linux Mint bootloader. This video shows you how to overcome this obstacle and how to install Linux Mint without a bootloader.

You simply need to start the installer from a terminal: ubiquity -b
This will open start the installer without the option to install the bootloader.

Using 'ubiquity -b' also installs Ubunutu without a bootloader. I have also tested in on KDE Neon. So, this approach should work for all Ubunutu derivatives.

Another very useful video -- thank you so much, ALU -- I have been trying to find out how to do this for ages!

Very useful, exactly what I was looking for; I'm in the same situation of managing my own bootloader and while I could of course fix it after Mint screws it up, having that happen would have been a major nuisance I really, really don't need if I can avoid it.

As an alternative, just point to a removable disk for the bootloader which you don't want as Linux distros don't check for the logic in that. The removable disk can also be "a security key" for you and 90% of people can't get to the login. Anyway, great help for me with piling up knowledge about bootloaders.

Awesome! I'd never know this was possible. I hope it will work for rEFInd, too, so I could install only rEFind and ditch GRUB forever!

I have a problem with Grub delay time. I want to install Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon without any other OS. When i do this everytime i see GRUB menu with 30 seconds waiting time. I tried to change waiting time to 0 but GRUB screen still appears with 30 seconds waiting time. Will this metod work for clean install?

Nice vid. Thanks. So you have to know the name of the bootloader for whichever flavor of Linux you're installing?

Hi ALU. Would these steps be the same if I installed Linux alongside my main OS, Windows 10, wherein Linux is to be installed on a separate hard drive? I would like to retain the Windows bootloader. Thanks.

I thought each O.S. came with it's own bootloader, but I was wrong, I had Windows 10, Linux mint 18.3 32 bit, and lastly Linux mint 18.3 64 bit installed, I deleted Windows 10 and Linux mint 32 bit version with GParted, but then I couldn't boot, it went into Grub rescue mode, plus it wouldn't allow me to re-install from my Live CD, it wouldn't boot it!

Hi - great videos. I am still learning the basics linux. I installed several distros in separate partitions. Each time the latest install took over as the Bootloader. That worked finde until the updates ran weeks later. I lost access to the Arch partition and things have got a little messed up. So is there anyway to remove the Bootloader from linux partitions already installed? Or do I have to wipe the partition and start over?
