I have never seen something that funny but that true at the same time. Yes, they completely get in your face like that. You know you’re in trouble when the Smokey the Bear hat hits you in the head. True story. When I was in basic a huge DI got in my face and started giving me crap about my name. So he asks me if I know who Henry Mancini is? Now, I grew up in a musical family so I quickly rattle off at the top of my lungs with “ Henry Mancini is a composer Sir! He is responsible for composing the Pink Panther theme, Moon River and the theme song to Peter Gunn, Sir!” Guy just looks at me, slightly shocked, and with a little smile curling the edge of his lip and walks away.

1982 3rd. Battalion 8th. Marine 2nd Division Paris Island grunt here . If you can't handle someone very close to your face, then the military is probably not gonna be your cup of tea !!! Me being 6.6 my Senior Drill Sergeant and Corporal Campbell were a lot shorter than me, so eyes forward wasn't bad for me when I was being dogged, I just looked over their head. But Drill Sergeant Watkins was 6.6 or 6.7, so with him the dogging was more personal !! The brim of their cover, or hat was usually what determined how close they would get !

You need to react to some USMC boot camp videos my friend. This is... tame.. preschool XD. It's not serious until the DI kicks over your rack, throws your belongings all across the squad bay and scream 1/4 inch from your face. ...good times.
Edit to add: In 2004 while at boot camp I made the mistake of asking to go to the head (bathroom) and stating that it was an emergency. I was made to run around the squad-bay making siren noises and screaming this recruit needs to piss for about 10 minutes before the DI got tired of it and let me go to the bathroom.

The military as a whole isn't this way, just the initial training phase and certain schools. I was in the Army and went to basic training in 2006. Yes, they scream in your face, force you to do exercises on the spot and other embarrassing stuff. Yelling at you is literally part of their job. During drill sargent school one of the exercises they do is to stand there and yell at a tree for a while. Just to get used to yelling lol. Once you finish training and get to your unit it's pretty much like a 9-5 job when your in garrison except where you have to wake up early M-F to exercise for 1 to 1.5 hours. Most of the time your off on weekends and get a 4 day weekend every month. It isn't bad.
